Hi people,
We’re heading to the shropshire hills at the half term and we’re taking bikes. We’re staying in the telford/Ironbridge area and probably have 3 or 4 days for riding. If anyone recommend any spots/trails less than an hour from there(or atttach a link) it would be great! One of the days I’m going to hopton to meet a friend but any opinions on eastridge/haughton hill/shelve/stiperstones/nesscliffe/grinshill. I’ve heard about the wrekin/ercall which is very close to us so if anyone could recommend a route there it would be very helpful. Thanks!🤘

If you're in Ironbridge gorge there's a reasonable short route I do there.

Easty has great riding but is more of a ride down ride up type place to get the best from it, Strava is your friend. It can be linked to stiperstones easily enough to give a more varied day out bridleways are obvious and fairly good, rim runner and flying Scotsman are the better trails off the RoWs. Shelve is a small area, good for the locals but hard to link into a decent day.

Mynd and caer caradoc are obvious enough and every mag will have done a ride there.

Haughmond is fine for a ride from home of an evening but not really worth the effort otherwise, nesscliffe is similar but a bit better.

Ceriog valley/Llangollen is at the limit of your hour but has some good riding, some options are cheekier than others.

^^ that.

No need to go very far from the Bridge to ride your bike.

I used to live there, I quite miss the place.

The Long Mynd is a good place to ride, you will need your climbing legs!

Map here; Long Mynd

As said above you can link it up with Caradoc & Stiperstones etc. Haughmond Hill is ok too, you could get 1 to 2 hours in there, there are some good, but very short trails.

Eastridge at Minsterley, you can link up with the Stiperstones too.

Both the Wrekin and the Ercall are for playing around trails in the woods, rather than one long singletrack route - The Wrekin trails are mainly on the north side facing the A5 - if you climb up the main walkers track (a decent pull) there is a telecommunications mast just before the trig point. You'll see some tracks down there - they are quite steep, so prob not a good choice if you have some casual riders with you. You could also follow the main path down SW which is a good descent but it's steep plus walkers.

The Ercall stuff is also facing the A5 and can be climbed from round the back (bit of argy bargy over access IIRC but I don't know the current situation). There's less height so it's easier to have an explore and try different lines - once you're at the bottom of the Wrekin you may not fancy riding back up!

Need to get the heatmap out really for that part of the world - see how to join up all the greenery around Telford.
