So - working away in the shed/garden office, and out of the corner of my eye, I see a shrew trot along the edge of the wall. It looks like they're setting up house under some cupboards - it has no fear and I'm watching it busily running back and forth carrying nest materials.

Should I be trapping? Putting poison down? The hole it's running in and out of is tiny, so the likelihood of my blocking up all such holes is minimal. If it were a mouse or rat, then I'd be putting something down to catch the little critters as they'd potentially damage wiring etc.

I didn't think shrews were much of a house invader, and they (to my understanding) generally feed on insects and slugs etc. I'm happy to let well alone (and anything that keeps slugs and bugs down in the garden is a good thing) but it's my home office so don't want to risk electric fires etc with something nibbling through cables.

(it's bringing all the nesting materials into the shed by the looks of things, rather than making use of anything that's lying around. Watching it carrying scraps of leaves etc)

You could always try and tame it. I saw a great book in the library all about it

Shrew should leave them well alone. That's my shrewd advice.

Oh how lovely. I'm quite envious.

Could you make a little video, would love to see them? The babies are minute.

You should buy yourself a special robe to wear whilst watching them build their tiny lair.

It'd be a shrew den vestment.

Shrews used to nest in our garage roof. They ate the grips on my bike over winter.
The cats used to catch them but not eat them as they contain something noxious even to a cat.
Dead ones stink worse than prawns.
Many years ago I was hoovering the utility room and lunged at a dust bunny that turned out to be a dead shrew in a state of decay that exploded inside the hoover. I think I still smell it.:-(

Something, I assume mice, ate the foam handle cover on the scarifier the other year - I suspect they were using it as nest filler.
