This must be about as boring as I've managed in the c.20 years I've been on here. But our "new" shower (with extension) is flooding semi-regularly and given what I am cleaning off the trap I can only assume it is the aqueous cream I have used for years to wash my face that is the problem. Doesn't seem to take much for it to accumulate around the lip and narrow down the gaps around the white insert and this result in flooding. Question is: is that little removable tray essential or should I just remove it? I presume it is to collect hairs and so on? Mrs Munkster tends to wash hair in the old bathroom and I wish I still had hair to lose down the plughole.

Looks like you don't have anything to stop larger items dropping down into the main trap if you remove the insert. The insert itself is there to control how the water flows into the main trap.

A halfway house measure would be to drill some holes in its base, I suppose.

On another note, aqueous cream every day on your face? It supposedly can make dry skin/eczema worse (although less of a problem if it's just a soap substitute and you're washing it all off immediately).

Yep, it's barely on my face for 30 seconds before I wash it off. I'm investigating alternatives (some "Aveeno, Skin Relief, Body Wash" coming tomorrow so we'll see) but I've been using AC for about 20 years. That could solve the issue if the trap is required I guess... Assuming new stuff isn't just as gloopy, but hopefully actual soap will dissolve rather than just transfer intact to the surfaces of the trap like the AC does!

If it’s the same as my Mac alpine low profile shower waste, the tray is effectively your u-bend. Remove it and there’s nothing stoping smells from the soil stack.

Also if it is similar to my Mac alpine system, there’s a length of flexi pipe between the waste and the rest of the drain and that does tend to trap oomsk over the months. An overnight drain cleaner every few months keeps things running smoothly tho

Arf @ "oomsk"

If only if the time period between backing up was measured in months. It's more like weeks at the moment. Hopefully new face wash will solve the issue.

Try asking your chemist for 'emollient cream' instead. It's not as cheap as acqueous but probably cheaper than a dedicated face wash. You'll only need a tiny bit to wash your face.
