For years I’ve maintained shower gel doesn’t work for me, just sliding off my body down the plug hole, wasted. Unless that it I use a bath sponge whereby it lathers up quite nicely.
Therefore, shower gel plus bath sponge has been my modus operandum for years. On a course yesterday I checked out of a hotel in the morning yet remain in the building for the course all day. I got a phone call mid afternoon - apparently I’d left one of my children’s bath sponges in the bathroom.
Come on then, it isn’t just me, is it?
Have you not heard of shower poufs/puffs?
have you got a shaved chest?
That's what the moob-rug is for. Lathering!
No shaving here, hmm I’d not thought of using my own body hair as a washing implement...
Seriously?
Dollop in your hand, then lather it into your head and pits, and from there over the rest of your body.
Sheesh.
Crap shower gel, that's your problem. The good stuff doesn't do that, Original Source Mint for the tingly win.
Or use a shower pouf, either works.
sliding off my body down the plug hole, wasted
Er, duh.. taking the dirt with it..
Soap. because: Plastic. This is the sort of consumerism we need to do less of.

I just use a plain unscented bar of soap. If I use shower gel it feels like I need another wash afterwards as it leaves a greasy residue. Don't understand why shower gel got so popular. It's more expensive, runs out quicker and less effective than plain old soap.
Shower scrunchie for using gel, lathers up a treat.
Exfoliates the skin too.
Agree - soap (decent stuff though) and a good sponge. Washes off quickly and you don't worry about using loads of it.
I'm going to go soap when this lot of gel runs out. Tried it before stopped with dry skin.
Any recommendations for non skin drying soap bars?
I use soap(simple) at home but shower gel in public places(work showers/swimming pool) because ease of transport and storage- where do you put the soap in the shower at the pool once you have lathered up. How ever shower scrunchie FTW

Shower gel is popular - like liquid hand soap in squidgy dispensers because - it was marketed as more hygienic
Yup, soap here too. My three grown-up sons thought I was a luddite, but the message about plastic waste is slowly getting through.
Never got on with shower gel. More often than not, doesn't lather properly for me especially if you are in a hard water area. I end up using half the bottle in a oner. Expensive and wasteful. A nice, cheap, effective, old school, environmentally sound bar of soap.
I’m so environmentally conscious that I just lick myself clean.

It's on page 4.
Soap on a rope!!
Get a nice lather going in your pubes (you do have some, right?) then spread over body.
Any recommendations for non skin drying soap bars?
Look at the soap section in any of the supermarkets, they all have their own variation of 100% natural soap. Comes in packs of 4, no scent or anything else added and usually cheaper than the fancy branded soaps next to them.
where do you put the soap in the shower at the pool once you have lathered up.
Back in it's soap dish and placed on the shelf.
So what is the 'manly' soap of choice!?
I need cutting edge packaging design.
I need a rugged image.
I need it on a hand twisted rope.
And I need an artisan soap dish of course to chuck it in my sports-bag.
...needs to moisturise as well! 🙂
Shower puff made of plastic? That’ll never do! Mini review of eco-friendly alternative:
Seeing as hair is apparently so good for foaming gel I intend to make shower puffs using recycled body hair from the shower trap.
Anyone want to join me in presenting this to Dragons Den?

Glad to be of service DezB. Nothing like a good thought provoking thread is there.
My wife makes trays of home made eco-friendly soap using only a base and natural colouring & perfumes which is great to use and means I can feel smug at epic STW levels while staying clean.

You're married to Anita Roddick?
Local hand made soap or pop to your local Oxfam / Beanfreaks and get the Faith In Nature stuff.
Pick one that says something about moisturising in the description and see if it's less dry...
'Soap saver' made of bamboo that gently exfoliates:
My experience was that it was fine for supermarket soaps, however when it came to 'premium' soaps they seemed to shrink rapidly despite not leaving them in the bag when not in use.
You can also buy soap bars without any packaging and buying in packs of 6 or 12 can save money.
Moving on to shower puffs, this is made from a natural material called ramie. Almost hard core exfoliating but it's very heavy when wet and never dries out.
Not all shower gels are equal and even a premium brand is not a good indicator of quality or concentration. However I did come across a premium brand where it was so concentrated that literally half a pea-sized amount was enough for my whole body. That plastic bottle lasted a very long time meaning less guilt on my part.
You can buy shower gel in 5 litre containers and simply decant to an old container.
HTH
hedley does your wife use the melt and pour base?
Boring soap pr original Sauce and shower puff here. Use much less gel than if you try and rub it on directly and does a bit of exfoliation too.
original source is minty fresh. ZING!
Soap is better than Shower gel, but it's a lot easier to use in soft water. In hard water, it'll never lather as well.
As to the actual soap, i like this one from india. About £1.65 each, so not the cheapest. But no rubbish in it, and it does the skin a lot of good.
The daughter uses this one - and it's very good. Again, lasts ages. Faith in Nature, as mentioned above
Don't stand under the spray when applying shower gel.
There. Not difficult, was it?
Looking forward to next weeks installment of the life of Kryton* - how do y'all wipe yer arse/clean yer boaby.

Yep. That's the one. I have seen literally everything now. 😆
That said, my armpits are currently coated in this, cos it don't smell.

good luck with that ,at the municipal pool i have to use - there is no shelf - any attempt to set a dish on the floor will result in it getting swept away by the water from others down into the ditch drain.
Perhaps we should raze the joint and build a new one with shelves.
I combat this wastage by only washing on a Sunday. I just stick it on dry and leave it there to flake off when its dry taking the filth with it.
Then I sweet all the dust in the house up and deposit it in a bucket which fill with water and stir after letting it settle I syphon off the liquid into a stainless pan and heat the to reduce it back down to a soapy paste at that point I place one end of a hand woven pubic hair rope on a baking tray and pour the paste over the tray and set it aside to dry.
Once dry I cut it into artisinal triangles, you'll find them on Etsy
Its good for a couple of goes before it starts getting unacceptably grey. I reuse the pubic hair ropes to make macrame air plant hangers.

Modus operandi, it's the genitive not the plural, a gerund can't be plural, the plural is modi operandi.

Hi, no she makes it the other way that I don't understand. Called saponification and involves some chemicals and safety goggles.
And that's me come screeching to a halt at the edge of my knowledge on the subject.

Is that your answer to everything these days Perchy?
+1 for soap BTW

That’s exactly the feeling I get when using any kind of soap. I worked in s soap factory for a while in my youth. Put me off using soap for good.

Oh don't worry, I've got many more personal habits which although I've obviously lived a sheltered life I'm convinced are not limited to me. No advice needed mind, but on this shower gel issue after 40 or so years of thankfully not experiencing another man in a shower I've come to the conclusion I'm not alone so felt I should share my doubt.
I must admit, two pages was beyond my initial expectations 😀
@ hedley thanks, your wife must be using the cold process method with lye. Proper soap! One of these days I'll have a go, bit nervous to be honest.
Put me off using soap for good.
So now you use soap for evil?! You monster!

Yes, I remember now, that's what it's called. Cold process. I really should spend more time listening to her.
I don't think it's that difficult. Seem to remember you can't get water in it or something but apart from that it goes ok. It's certainly a good cheap way of making loads of soap and doesn't take long to "cure" before you can use it and we've never had any issues with burning skin or anything.
Only thing to watch is the process of making it does denature the scent and colour so you end up with grey poorly scented soap unless you put loads in or something.
So now you use soap for evil?
Imperial Leather or Dove?
Put me off using soap for good.

That’s what working in a soap factory in Brighouse will do to you
☹️
I live in Brighouse. Where can I get the evil soap?
Dove soap for me.
Also have Molton Brown bottle stuff which gets used for weddings, funerals and births
From the shitty soap factory (If it’s still there) John Drury. Mmmm animal fat, caustic soda and perfume. Sweet memories
Also have Molton Brown bottle stuff which gets used for weddings, funerals and births
This requires further explanation. In what context are you using the soap for births and funerals?
I will put a STW Soap Special in a newsletter next week, but for now:-

Thanks hedley sounds as though practice makes perfect! Presumably your wife uses a dedicated large pan and a gizmo for cutting? How much at a time does she make and where's best to store it?

Every day is a school day, I never appreciated there was a market for bars pre-impregnated by cling-ons.
There are many specialist niche soaps.
My favourite is the one for motorists to wash their testicles.
Carbolic
Pah, my wife makes our soap using rendered fat from our own home killed organic cattle, a caustic soda lye, artisan coffee grounds or sometimes soot as an exfoliate, and flowers from the garden for scent. Not sure if it would win any prizes, but works fine and cost almost nothing to make.
Got about 10 kilos of the stuff so may well last my lifetime 🙂
Dry skin?
Nettle soap is what you want, awesome stuff...say goodbye to itchy flaky scalp with nettle shampoo also
@Brant - the name on the PX page for the soap is great, as it repeats the same Ltd. company name in Finnish then Swedish... something like ‘genuine Vaasan (a city in Finland) soap Ltd.’

STW smug factor OFF THE SCALE!!
Chandrika sandalwood ayurvedic soap from my local health food shop does me fine from hair to feet, costs less than £2 a bar and is free of all the usual nasty shite that you get in shower gels, lasts for ages and doesn't dry out your skin or strip it of essential oils.
Excessively perfumed shower gels are for sweaty teenage boys with jock itch.
I use the handmade soap from the Paper Street Soap Co. If you have a problem with it, I recommend keeping it to yourself though.

Using shit might actually improve the quality of 99% of soaps out there.
