Curious about foot shape. Shoes often too narrow for my feet but are my feet reality so abnormaly wide?

Place bare foot on paper keep pen vertical and draw around foot if you can please!

I don't have the patience to mess around with the whole uploading of photos thing but I can describe.

I had to measure my foot for a fitting when I was after a pair of Loake boots a few years ago. I sent off the measurements and they came back and told me I had made a mistake and had to do it again. I did it again with the same result and sent it back. Again they came back and said that they couldn't possibly be the correct measurements as this would make the width of your foot pretty much the same as the length. In then end, after proving to them that I had measured correctly they politely told me I was a freak and no shoe would ever fit a square foot 🙂

So no, your foot isn't stupidly wide but mine is

Because, most shoes aren't foot shaped, weirdly!

Take any regular shoe/trainer insole, and stand on it barefoot. It demostrates how the foot is forced into the shape of the shoe.

I switched to Vivobarefoot some time ago. Look weird, but very comfortable. And foot can do it's thing.

You have my sympathy, it's bloody painful.

My feet are fairly wide but it's the size of my toes that people comment on. My surfing buddies call me BFT.

My feet are essentially two-dimensional - from the top they look like normal, if slim, feet. From the side they have the profile of your average Dover Sole.

I read recently that one of the side-effects of lockdown is that many people have gained a shoe size due to not stuffing their toes into shoes on a daily basis.

But it was correct? Does it mean that your feet are very wide or very short?

Very wide presumably means that you are less likely to fall sideways, very short more likely to fall forward?

But there must be an optimum hip/foot width ratio or you’d trip over the edges of your feet.

Came here expecting some very specialist internet interest content. Now find myself sad I’m not anywhere with foot online drawing equipment. It feels too forward to just post a picture of a whole foot. Like the difference between using a feather and a chicken.

They are very wide, and not very long. I am stable sideways but as my beer belly grows I risk toppling forward easily

Works perfectly for elephants

Like barrysh1tpeas, I only wear Lems, freet, altra Xero and similar shoes.

When I buy shoes, I pull out the insole and stand on it. If my foot doesn't stay within the edges, it's a no go.

It really is. I though my recent achilles tendonitis was painful, but that was just a tickle in comparison. Fortunatley the meds are working.

Fellow current gout sufferer here so my left foot is like a balloon (which is unfortunate timing as i get married next week and don't fancy wearing flip flops.

My issue is that I've a very high instep so can't fit my foot in anything that isn't vertically roomy (no Chelsea boots really) I think they're pretty average width wise for their size

@sirromj I loved my Vapour gloves, but they didn't last anywhere near as long as Vivos. I have been wearing a pair of Vivo Gobi boots to the office for about a year, I do a 3 walk nearly every lunch in them too. They're still holding up fine.

I'm a narrow size 8 with 270mm feet, nothing special and my big toe is longest, left foot is 3mm longer than right. I often struggle with shoes being too wide. Currently rocking a pair of their wool slippers.

My feet are foot shaped not shoe shaped. All my shoes have an empty inch at the front

I've endured many problems getting walking boots that don't blister my heels. Most of the common brands (like  Scarpa) are just too baggy at the heel by the time I get a boot otherwise large enough. Salomon fit perfectly .

My ankles are ridiculously thin compared to my legs.

Like I said, narrow feet. Symmetric too - length to width ratio of 2.84.

For most, isn't that around the same time they start CrossFit and go vegan? 😉

@dirksdiggler

Or when they get bored of squished painful toes, bunions do look fun though.

Vivo & Altra wearing CrossFitter here. Lake extra wide fit shoes on the bike(s).

Used to get a lot of random foot pains after running or riding, but seems to be on the mend after mostly switching to better shoes. My feet (and especially toes) are noticeably wider visually but I haven’t measured them.

Still have a pair of Nike SBs, and a pair of “normal” smart boots for work in winter so not all foot shaped shoes.
