Purely for my own amusement, lets see the woodburning stoves you have in your van/motorhome/caravan/houseboat/etc. Coal-fired ones if you must 😉

never mind pictures, how the hell do you keep the fire burning? just got a gas bottle wood burner and can i **** keep it lit! 😡
i'm burning in the garden to get rid of the initial smell as the paint burns off, i've got dry timber in it, but every time i close the door the fire dies!
been checking google and apparently closing the door is the way forward to get the fire roaring.
i'm lost 🙁

Door closed, but make sure the vents at the bottom are open too, soon have it roaring.

How soon are you closing the door?

Stove Might just be poorly made also.

There is a big merc camper lives on the beach at aberdeen has a woodburner in. Looks bad ass, also has adaquate venting

Anotherstan - have you connected any flue pipe...?

i can get a good fire going with the door open, but when i then close the door it dies down and i lose the flame.
the vents are just 3No x 15mm (approx) holes drilled in the side at the base. they have no way of regulating.
like i say, it's just a home made gas bottle wood burner, but the plan was to install it in the garage. not too keen on that if i have to have the door open all the time.

edit - no flue pipe yet, just using in the garden for now.

A flue will generate a bit of 'suck' get some air flowing through it. Can you just bodge one on to test it?

There's the problem IMO. As Andrewh writes - I doubt it's drawing very much air at all.

well, it has the beginings of a flue.

there's a 300mm length of 100mm diameter pipe coming from the top. would that not be enough to "draw" ?

Not really. At least a couple of metres would be better.

No shit. Looks like a windy night, too.

Is it quite still where you are right now, Anotherstan...?

Inset stove with vents round fire box that channel the hot air to the room, works quite well without having the stove intruding into room, 30mm thick polished afghan slate surround and 40mm rough/natural wavy afghan slate hearth, still needs a few coats of slate sealant oil or something to bring out the natural colour and pattern which i haven't got round to yet.

i would say 'quite still' is a pretty accurate description of the conditions in the garden, yes.

The point of a flue is that as the hot air rises it is replaced with cold air from low level (this is actually known as the chimney effect) so for a fire to burn fiercely a flue/chimney and a means of air getting in from below the fuel, is pretty essential

If you could see the amount of water lying in my garden at the moment due to the snow melt and the fact that i am just 6ft above the sea level high water mark along with these council houses being built on the most impractical clay/mud surfaces possible then you'd see why i can "claim" houseboat status*

* : or perhaps i just read the post title rather than the first post but in true stw status i am pleading total ignorance.......... 😉
