I don't have a photo, but ours (came with the house) is not much over a metre square, probably no more than 50cm deep and is raised up so that water level is about waist-level (kids will struggle to topple in I think). It is built of stone with a liner in, and a structure around the edge for supporting marginal plants in pots.

It sounds absurdly tiny, but we have something like 5 frogs, a large quantity of frog-spawn, there are about 5-6 smooth newts and the garden has at least 2 toads which I assume are using it to spawn also.

Shall take some piccies if I remember.

🙂

Brought a small plot beside us that had a delapidated garage with an inspection pit on it:

OUrs sounds a bit like BigDummy's pond.
Very small but filled to the brim with frogs and spawn, also at a higher point than the lawn. Birds use it to drink from and I grow my herbs around it, so it looks pretty.
I too will try and remember to take a piccy.

Beach access for safety. A wee "spring" rises from beneath the decking and plastic ducks can be raced in the stream.

I don't have a pic but ours is square, and made with what is basically a single level display tank (kind of thing you see with plants etc in at a maidenhead acquatics) with a timber surround, which is chest height for my two year old.

Filtered and with plants and fish. Not much by way of frogs in ours. Do other high pond havers put in some kind of arrangement to allow them in or out.

We've inherited this manky monstrosity with our new house. I was going to dismantle it and fill it in but this thread has got me thinking I might keep it. Its got a working pump/filter thing but no plants (but lots ofnslimy weed) and no signs of life. It appears to be a rubber liner which holds water well and its about 2ft deep at its deepest point.

I'd like to encourage wildlife so I'm thinking drain it, clean out the filth, re fill, add a bucket full of goldfish and some plants. Is it as easy as that? Normal goldfish OK?? What plants should i put in and around it???

Go to a good garden centre with an aquatic section and they'll give good advice.

Refill with rainwater when you have sorted it out.

I don't at present have any means to harvest rainwater - how important is that bit? Would tap water left for a few weeks be OK?
