Mrs. S bought me a used Marantz TT5005 for xmas 2020 along with a few LPs. I've not had a TT for about 30 years but once I heard that vinyl sound again, I was back in. Within a month I sold the Marantz (with Mr.S's blessing) and bought a manual TT, an Audio Technica LP5x shown here:

The uplift in sound quality was night and day. It sounds so good. I've since added about 25 LPs to my collection and am really enjoying the experience.

I've recently had the headshell modified with a RigB (rigid body) cartridge housing. It's made from machined aluminium and is much more stable than the stock plastic one.

Next upgrade may be a stylus but for now I'm more than happy with its glorious reproduction.

What have you peeps got in the loft or the man cave?

Ok cool where are you getting your lps from, I m looking for kraftwerk, massive attack, radiohead type stuff, best I can find is c 25 quid each. First pressings are c200 so better keep looking in the chazzer.

Project T1 Phono SB and a Debut II (in the foreground).

Just got the T1 to go in another room, but gave it a quick spin to see how it sounds. It's so much better than the Debut - I have a feeling an upgrade is imminent.

Technics SL 1210 here - going through a Roksan amp and B&W PM1 speakers.
Still not convinced that vinyl sounds better that good quality digital - and turning discs over after 20 mins is a PITA

I have 2 x Technics SL 1210 Mk3s sat in their boxes, and have been for a while. I think I should sell them as I'm not going to use them again (no space or time). Any ideas on the best way to do this? What would they be worth?

Also if I do ever DJ again I'd probably want a digital setup

Not particularly hi-fidelity - a ProJect RPM 1.3 Genie that connects straight into the phono input on an Onkyo surround sound amp then to Q-Acoustics speakers. I keep it around to play vinyl that I don't have access to on more convenient media. Plus it matches nicely 🙂

At least £600 for the pair - perhaps more

This thread is getting me excited for my soon to be completed music / play room (we've just moved house and I've been living off Google speakers for the last year or so cos we didn't have space).

No pics, but I'll be running a Pro-Ject Debut III USB through an Acoustic Research A-04 amp and Q Acoustics 3020i speakers. The Qs are replacing some massive Mission 737R floorstanders which I just don't have space for.

Turntable will probably be the next upgrade - I've no idea why I bought a USB one with built in phono stage, but there you go. I suspect it needs a new cartridge, so I'll use that as an excuse to upgrade 😀

40yr old Acoustic Research EB101 turntable hooked up to a Rotel amp with built in phono stage and a pair of KEF floor standing speakers (600 series?).

Tbh, I find that it seems happier with the lighter weight vinyl of the '80s than today's heavier pressings. Might be a cartridge issue.

No pics but, like you, my brilliant wife bought me a turntable for Christmas a few years ago. It was a Rega RP-3 with some kind of upgraded gubbins and sounded lovely plugged into my old Nad and Missions.

But I knew it was one or two steps up in quality from my old bits, and finally splashed out for a new amp and speakers last year: an as-new Rega Elex-R off ebay and a new pair of Wharfedale Lintons.

The sound it all makes is absolutely gorgeous, and we've been buying records like mad during lockdown; I guess it helps that my wife is a musician.

… those speakers, though 🙂

my mate's a sound engineer, and spent a load of time in Trident Studios in the 80s and also loves this system, saying it's the closest he's heard to the way music sounded on the playback monitors there 🙂

You said cheap...
This corner of the living room is a bit neglected at the moment, but my Pioneer PL-12D gets regular, if occasional, use. Guess it was never the most spectacular bit of kit, but it's got a bit of a back story... I rescued it from my parent's garage when I was at uni. Having never had a turntable before, it took me a while to work out it was missing the headshell. New replacements were expensive and I was a student, but after a bit of searching (including, thanks to the Pioneer's typography, for "PL-120" 🙄), I found an old one with a cracked cover on eBay for not much money. I asked the guy to send me just the headshell to save on postage, but he stripped everything intact off the base and so somewhere I've got a box with a spare tonearm and various other bits.

I'm still no expert, so any tips on caring for it would be appreciated.

This guy (on Audioshite if you use Facebook) is brilliant. He gave me loads of advice when I picked up a PL12-D for my office (a fantastic turntable...)
