Still lives, studio portraits, anything non-spontaneous.

EXCEPT pics of your bike in a tree or some such silliness.

I'm new to all this camera stuff, I've got no lenses / lights / tripod. I did this with a canon with it's stock (kit?) lens, an anglepoise lamp with a paper bag over it (fire hazard!) and the camera balanced on a pile of books. I should've swept the floor and cleaned the chainring, but I'm pleased with the result none the less. Can't remember if I made it black and white in photoshop of whether the lighting just made it look that way. Goddamit I'm useless...

EDIT - just had a good look at the large original, chain is a bit goldish and hub is a bit reddish, the pic above is not photoshopped, just small.

Did this for a 'photo a week' thing I was doing with a mate. It was a bit rushed as I had forgot to get a photo done.
Quite pleased with the idea, but not necessarily the result. I didn't have long to set it up & ended up using my Lumicycles to illuminate the shot.
If I did it again, I'd spend more time on getting more saturated colours & probably have some water/droplets/sparkling water somewhere in the mix

Did this one, while experimenting with my old DimageZ3 years ago. More happy with this one, but it's quite a low-res image. Ideally would like to repeat with the D80 & spend a bit more time with lighting it:

giantalkali that's a lovely shot. I was going to say no bikes at all in the brief but I'm glad I didn't.

Static lighting is an excellent option for this kind of thing. I must get a powerful torch for my camera bag.

Stumpy.. maybe a sky blue background on that...?

Molgrips, thanks, still getting 'to grips' (see what I did there) with camera, hope to make the most of what I've got.

I think my monitor calibration must be a bit out, as on-screen for me, you can see a lot more detail in the wine glass that the slices are put into.
Might also be something to do with the Photobucket upload too.

Not sure about sky blue, but it definitely needs something. I was thinking filling the glass with sparkling water to add a bit of definition. Could do with fiddling with the lighting though, definitely.
I think I only spent about 30 mins on this including cutting all the fruit up, cleaning the glass, digging out my lumi's, finding a dark background etc....

Keen to get on with some more of this type of thing.

giantalkali, loving your image. I take it you've edited the original to give it that sepia effect? It really suits the style of the image.

managed to find the unedited original, I used a function called 'lomography' it's a retro camera application that gives a dark halo and increases contrast so far as i can tell.

Stumpy - just that when I saw a glass full of lemons and limes I thought summer, sangria, blue skies and sunshine that kind of thing. If I were better at photoshop I'd try it out 🙂

Good shout! Hadn't considered that.
