Evening all,
the old sheet on the floor solutions has met its limit - having just inherited another 10kg of neatly assorted bags of sorted coloured blocks, I’m desperate to find a way to store that 1) is compatable with two under 8 year olds, 2)won’t be a complete ballache to replace after playing and 3)that won’t stymie creativity. Nothing quite like rummaging through a giant pile to see what comes to mind.
how’s everyone else managing their LEGO collection?

The key is colour identification, having a colour chart is useful for distinguishing between brown and reddish brown or light grey vs medium stone grey.

If not by colour keeping mould types seperate. For example these are 4 distinct variations of the same part.

Obviously you want to keep the kids as far away from it as possible, it's not a toy 🙂
Seriously though for kids a few big boxes you can rummage through to find bits, to be honest I still build like that now, usually a big pile of random (usually grey) bits. If you want to be slightly more organised (and unless you love sorting the stuff you don't) sperate by type, eg plates in one box, bricks in another, people and bits in a third but to be honest you'll just spend all your time sorting it.

My wife's response to seeing the storage system of @stumpyjon was as follows: "Can I have an affair with him? Just until he's sorted all my Lego."
Might take a while.
Growing up in the 1970s, this was our solution. We progressed to TWO buckets when our collection expanded
to be honest you’ll just spend all your time sorting it
I suspect this is the crux of the matter….
our childhood solution was an old yellow cool box with no lid - putting all the pieces on a sheet felt revolutionary!
