...because we have absolutely no creative or design flair!

we bought a new (1998 vintage) house before christmas. its a bit of a project as its not seen any real maintenance ever so the decor is very 1998 (think dado rails, artex and gold door handles)

job #1 is the ensuite as the period basin has been smashed (shame as it was clearly beautiful) but despite dragging the wife round the DIY sheds, tile warehouses and the local bathroom store we are no further forward.

i'm looking to STW for a bit of inspiration, ideas and recommendations for suppliers we should be looking at.

we need: -
tiles
flooring
toilet, basin & taps
shower tray (current one is 760x760 but the alcove is 900 deep)
thermostatic shower
lighting

Make it a wet room??

Come back post ride and just shower in kit for a rinse, then shower sans kit while the Mrs collects it from the floor and runs it down to the machine before bringing you a fresh espresso for you while you towel your hair dry....

Good luck!

Choosing this stuff is a nightmare.

The price difference between very similar looking stuff is amazing. You are never sure if you are buying absolute junk or getting ripped off.

I was recommended to stick to branded stuff but not the stupid high end ranges which were a rip off.

I picked up stuff from a few different places. If I found stuff on line that appeared to be cheaper compared to Wickes and similar, I would check it out in the store to see what is like then buy it on line. Naughty I know but the difference could easily be 40%.

I got a branded shower enclosure off ebay for about a third of the price of what some places were selling it for.

I ended up getting the toilet and sink from a local merchant who were having a promotion on Armitage Shanks stuff and it was as cheap as anyone on line.

Only advice I'd give is this "STICK TO WHITE" Coloured sanitary ware will cause you major decoration issues in future if not now.

Good advice above regarding avoidance of high end over-priced stuff. It is after all just a bathroom. Invest where you can see the rewards.

Great advice so far thanks. With our last place we picked up a load of stuff on eBay with mixed results. Great steel bath, basin and taps which were a bargain. Wall hung concealed cistern wc was pretty good but the polish instructions were a bit of a faff and the cistern was rubbish.

Very difficult to tell if youre getting a decent deal.

It all looks pretty functional to me and in decent condition from your photos. Just how much time do you spend in there - it's not like your going to be taking a long soak in the bath and who else is going to see it. My advice - do nothing and buy a new bike. 🙂
It would have to be the lowest priority on my list if I were doing the whole house. Change the door handle and keep the door shut.

dado rail in the en-suite, awesome!

My place needs a revamp. Early 1990's decor and I *do* have a dado rail but only in the lounge 😉

...Watches thread with interest...

Frameless Single pivot shower door

Try a Slight shade difference between side walls tiles and back wall of shower to accencuate
The depth

We used just-off-white glass swimming pool mosaics floor to ceiling with a black epoxy grout (with sparkly bits) with all white Ideal Standard wc & basin. Flooring is blue green Marmoleum, with a floating lime waxed t&g ceiling with led down lighters.

Am I the only person who doesn't like wetrooms (not that I don't like what you've done with yours 'up there', I just don't like them).
I'd much rather have a large shower cubicle than a wetroom....

I have a similar dilemma approaching in the next few months. I really like the idea of a wetroom, but google suggests it's a nigthmare/expensive.

You're missing the key factor, women. As a man I'd be happy with a proper shower, bog and basin, but what do I know!

Can't help you on tiles and flooring. Also, I don't have an ensuite.

The best advice you'll get is to stick to big known brands. They may cost a few quid more than the stuff off eBay or from the B&Q Warehouse but when something goes wrong you'll be glad of it. Usual examples are cistern flush buttons and tap inserts. B&Q won't want to or don't know anything about spares, they'll just try to sell you a new tap/toilet.

Sanitaryware - stick to Ideal Standard or Twyfords. Roca is becoming more common.
Taps - Ideal Standard, Bristan (ace for aftersales), Grohe
Shower - As taps but add in Mira & Triton.

Looks like that tray is on a riser so you either have concrete floors of the builder was too lazy to cut a hole in the floor to run the waste out.

no wetroom for me. nice as they are, i've got so much to do with this house i can live without the extra work involved. also, the shower really has to be in the alcove so it wouldnt really work.

AVDave - it was last on the list right up until the shelf fell into the sink and smashed it.

Sideways - your lights look rather flash! what are they??

T1000 - single pivot door is a must. the folding one on it presently is pretty new, no idea why they specced it tho, there's no need for it and it is very narrow. i like your tiling idea too. any pics??

AP - gotta have some pics of that, it sounds awesome!

can anyone recommend tile suppliers or give any general tile related advice??

For good quality products at reasonable prices take a look at Victoria Plumb online.
They have excellent customer service too 🙂

Go to an established and reputable supplier for your tiles. Unless you don't mind your grout lines all over the place, then B&Q will be fine.

From experience.... If I were to have ours done again, I would expect everything to go wrong so would have better access panels and would expect to reduce the need to rip out floors and walls to fix simple issues.
Buy extra tiles for when you'll need replacements and the larger the tile, the less grout to keep clean. May sound a bit doom and gloom but we opted to hide everything and 6 years on had to pay loads to fix minor leaks/blown seals etc.

Ideal Standard sanitary wear - we went for Studio which has clean, simple lines. Taps from same source. Tiles from Fired Earth - huge discount on discontinued mosaics used for feature band, remainder large rectangular matte white with 20% off in their regular sale. Plain glass Roman door, again with a hefty sale reduction. Aqualisa Quartz shower via a mate at trade price - all pipe work/mixer exposed with pump in attic above to minimise access issues should we have any subsequent problems with leaks etc.

Can't show you a photo of ours as it's getting decorated and is looking really bad.

northernmatt - has given good advice above.

We scrimped and bought awful B&Q and victoria plum rubbish, it's looking tatty and after only 6 years.

We have underfloor heating so no radiator taking up space.
Use big tiles where possible, just easier to clean. Maybe something white and just accessorise with colour.
Always white sanitary wear.
