Let's see them (& what lens you used)

.

Ulterior motive: I'm looking at the options of wide-angle lenses for my M4/3 camera and while there aren't loads, there is a very decent 7-14 (35 mm 14-28 equivalent) and a very compact 9-18 (35 mm 18-36 equivalent) but no wide primes that aren't fish-eye.

Don't have any online at the moment and it's a bit late but will maybe stick some up tomorrow if I remember. I went for the Oly 9-18 as it's a hell of a lot cheaper and smaller. That along with the slightly less extreme range (and up to 36mm equiv) means it gets used a lot more. The 7-14 is actually really big in comparison, and quite heavy.

Aye, and my local camera shop are good enough that they had a Olympus 9-18 in stock that I had a look at and were getting a Panasonic 7-14 in anyway. It'll give me the opportunity to see just how much bigger and heavier the Panasonic is. I agree, the Olympus would get used more, as my default lens in a lot of cases, but the extra width from the Panasonic, sharper image and bigger aperture are all niggling factors 🙂

Olympus are bringing out a pro range 7-14 f/2.8. Meant to be released next year but may be very expensive compared to the 9-18. Touted US price is $1800.

Not tried the 7-14 but I've ha a go with the 9-18mm and it's a really nice lens. Quite compact and will take filters unlike the 7-14.

I'll dig through my flickr. I've got a Minolta Rokkor 24mm prime on my film SLR which I love. Don't use it so much any more but it's a lovely lens.

I really like it for landscapes, partly because it captures an image which overlaps quite nicely with your field of vision, so you get the photos back and it's very much like what you saw when you were there.

Not got much to hand online, but here are a couple of my holiday snaps (probably not the best examples):

All taken with a Sigma 10-20mm mounted on a Nikon D80. Good lens - I like it a lot.

This probably says more about my composition skills (or lack thereof) as a bumbling snapper, but I find it quite hard to take some landscapes with as the wide angle pushes everything so far away, majestic mountain ranges can easily turn into lines on the horizon.

The secret seems to be plenty of foreground detail or lead-in lines but it's something I'm still trying to get right (not that I get to do much carefully considered kid-free photography these days!)

Yes, the trick is to have something in the foreground as well as background. You have to think in terms of depth not width, as this gives the impression of space and distance more than actual space and distance does. You will have huge DoF, and you need to use this to your advantage.
