Was really good, about the cars and less gap filler.

Apart from what happened to that poor FD 😥

Yeah, tonight’s was the best one in ages, Japanese car culture is mad as a bag of owls!

The car auction looked like Royal Portbury Dock at Avonmouth, where all the ships unload new cars, from the elevated section of the M5 it looks just like that.

Loved that one.

The Dodge, such a pretty car.

The 2cv, such a pretty car.

I loved that 2CV bit. I laughed till I fell off the chair. And he is right. I once drove one round a sunny European city suburb with the roof back and it still rates as one of my most enjoyable driving experiences of all times. Proper motoring

Proper chemistry between them now, the chat flows better and the clips have got a bit more car interest and a bit less stunt to them. Knocks spots off the Grand Tour now.

Didn’t bother with the last series but a few TG ads have appeared in my feed and looked good.

Watched it tonight and really enjoyed it, there seems to be a bit more natural chemistry between the presenters and a bit more of a flow to everything.

Will be watching again next week.

Chris Harris has to be the dullest person ever to commentate on a race, that part on the hot hatches racing he killed it.

Missed the first bit with the Dodge ( a bit too slow changing channels after Countryfile ) ..will catch up on iPlayer .

I've never had the pleasure (?) of a 2CV ..but got the impression that Chris Harris only bought 'his' on the day of the show and it was a hastily ( but funny ) cobbled together piece ..the egg bit though has been done by the previous trio ..if you swap water for eggs ..

Poor old Rory ..still getting the arse end of the show and if he hasn't got a contract beyond this series ..I just can't see him in the next ( if there is a one ) ..my money is on Ant McPartlin !

He has had that 2CV for quite a while.  Did a Youtube piece on it quite a while ago.  I drove a 2CV for around a year and they are great (I was only 19 so still a maniac driver so it slowed me down nicely although still got stopped by police for cornering too fast but I did explain it only looked fast because the car was leaning over so much)

Always though about buying one again but they aren't cheap anymore (not compared to 30 years ago) so guess a lot of people see the appeal of them,

Hey ..it takes a lot of skill to drive a mini Cooper while fully pissed up with your mother in the passenger seat at 4.00am in that there London and only hit two cars ...

( I had seen the article prior to nominating 😁 )

Kerley ..I stand corrected then ..he just doesn't spend too much time cleaning & polishing ..

Good episode. The back and forth between Matt and Chris is fun, the 2CV segment was fun.

This would suggest that he doesn't have what it takes to be a full-on Top Gear presenter. Only 2 cars... A lack of application and dedication. 🙂

It's worth watching the Chris Harris on Cars YouTube video of the 2CV. It's filmed exactly like one of his supercar reviews, lots of slowmo and big bends. The way the front wheel wobbles and warps as he steers in the slowmo footage is amazing!

Seems it's not on YouTube anymore, so here it is-

http://videos.sapo.pt/84zjVpwOeVPfmsQfiuIP

I thought that was a good episode, the plane was interesting and the 2CV bit was funny.

I think the answer to making the new Top Gear a success is to drop, or at least minimise, the studio sections. This is how I've been watching it and I've actually enjoyed it. Fast forward through all of the studio bits (including the Star in the Reasonably Fast Car).

EDIT: I've also decided my mid-life crisis purchase (when it comes) will be an Alta Redshift MX

Liked Matt in Italy. Rory in the Camaro was dull (and he can't pronounce Camaro). Tractor was lolz. Star in a reasonably fast car was pretty dull as per.

Stupid niggly question about the Camaro - what were the paddles for when it was defiantly a manual they were driving?

I don't know the maths here ..but Sabine ( tiresome now ) was supposed to be 3 seconds quicker than Jamie ( although we have no actual evidence of that ) ..but what we do know is that he wasn't in the car when she did the lap .(while she was when he did his best time ).

I'm guessing that he must be a good 12st ..meaning the car was that much lighter when she did her lap ..would that in itself not  save at least 3 seconds ?

If so ..what did the whole thing prove ? ( nothing ! )

No, that weight is not worth 3 seconds in that car. All it showed it that sabine is a much better driver than rory - which we knew anyway, what with sabine being a professional racing driver and rory being an annoying ****

TG obviously ran out of superlatives when they featured a Ferrari and immediately followed up with the Camaro.  There's only so many metaphors for "fast" that can be trotted out before it gets really boring, but Sabine shouting at Rory was mildly amusing.  In contrast, the tractor segment was very funny indeed.

The supercar superlatives criticism isn't just aimed at TG, I find that I fast forward the supercar features on TGT too.

Matt and Chris seem to have genuinely bonded and the chemistry seems authentic.  I enjoyed last week's piece on the 2CV, both presenters made it very watchable.

With the wet laps they should get Chris to do a lap then the star. They can then say you were 20 seconds slower which makes you the nearest or X nearest ever to Chris .

It would be more relevant.

Rory is boring.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. Yes.

Yes.

They get the worst feedback about the interviews every year but they keep them regardless.

Does anyone else simply fast forward through them every time? If they want a "star" involved then put them in a challenge/race/whatever.

The dry and subtle humour is where it's at and it's coming,  slowly.  There needs to be a bit more mischief and a little less showboating. Real reactions, even if understated, beat over the top cheese any day.

Yup, fast forward through the celebs but very time. Hopefully they see folk do this on iplayer

the best thing about the tractor was actually a photo of it drifting on the TG website - serious amounts of tyre deflection!

I CGAF about the comedy skits, don't care about tractors or some faux race/challenge balls, if you want to relive that shit just watch Clarkson and his accolytes recycle it for big dollar on Amazon. Just... talk... about... cars. Please?

There are plenty of decent car channels on Youtube, where they talk about just the cars so Top Gear doesn't have to offer that.  20 years ago it needed to offer it as couldn't;t see it elsewhere.

Not sure what Top Gear does offer but I am sure loads of people must like it.

I always ff through the 20 mins of siarfc, i have done for years. It’s boring.

I do the same on gt when I watch that, although im not sure I’ll bother with that again. If i can switch a programme on and immediately and accurately predict the script, then its run its course as far as im concerned.

As mentioned above, there are only so many ways of describing a fast car, so I guess that makes it dull for some people. 'Just talk about cars'  That sounds even duller.

Not as dull as not comedians trying to be funny to a formula that was past its sell-by five years ago. That's REALLY dull.

Totally appreciate there's plenty of Youtube car reviews out there, so maybe that's not straight-up what they should do, but in the name of god, please stop just doing Clarkson era skits. Obvious, dull, not funny.

Anyone else finding that with fast cars so commonplace now, they're just not very interesting any more? It's all repetition of a theme which has been running for decades, and it's all a bit tedious when they're described in the same way week after week. I'd much prefer to see stuff like the 2CV and other classics, as well as the technology of the future.

To be fair, I think they've rejuvenated the show, purely through the excitement they have for what they're doing. It's definitely not as bad as the old crew going through the motions of churning out the same old shit they've done for 20 years so they can get paid at the end of the month. A little shake-up of the formula wouldn't be a bad thing though.

I was going to tune in on Sunday after a piece on country file.  But to me it's a chore now to watch it. I used to think it was great. Then the jezza scandal came. I give it a chance with Evans et al  and even checked out the grand tour. But I just seem to have no interest anymore.

Again, I give you Youtube.  Loads of channels providing in depth coverage that people actually interested in cars want to see.  TV is slowly dying as it can no longer compete on these types of subjects

Well ..the end of the series ..will there be another ?

Apparently not from that location as the airfield has been sold to a housing developer with planning permission approved ...certainly the end of the star in the car ( whatever it is called now )...if they don't find another race track ..

Really impressed with the Alpha SUV...and that Renault Alpine ( please don't say Alpeen! ) looked fun until it caught fire !

Presenters still naff ..would anyone really be that bothered if it didnt return ?

The Alpine proved to be just a Renault with a sporty look and engine, hideous interior.

Parts of the SUV test were amusing but the totally pointless “Oh I’m lost” bit was cringeworthy.

Harris was at Dunsfold a few days ago in a shiny new Porsche.

Spent half of yesterday's working out where on the cross country course they were! Nice use of the Lion Bridge! Looked as if they filmed it early in the week before the trails, which are sponsored by Land Rover...

The take-away (ugh) from last night, don't overdo it in a Volvo SUV they aren't up to 'proper' off-road driving.

The series had more amusement in a single episode than a whole series of 'The Amazon Three'. It's no longer must see viewing in the house though.

I thought the "Alpeen" looked cheap: Not necessarily in the finishes, just the overall design.

He was also banging on about weight saving and yet they chose to include a second set of headlights. Yes, I know this was to emulate the original rally cars, but surely goes against weight savings elsewhere, and certainly didn't help the looks.

No one in their right mind would spend over £50K on a Renault.

So they are trying to turn it into a league of their own (lads lads lads, top bantz) but with cars as the vessel, rather than sport? I foresee Harris having the piss mercilessly ripped out of him whenever he starts getting techy about cars...

At least they’ll be able to understand each other.

Actually it's not so bad didn't they briefly attach James Martin to the show? I suspect so it would be a relief when they signed someone else.

No chance, can't stand Freddie Flintoff, not a fan of Paddy - did like Chris Harris.

Extra Gear sounds better with Rory & Sabine.

I think the biggest problem is it all feels like a celebrity "Jim'll fix it" where the new presenters are giddy at the thought of getting to play at hosting their favourite show. They should be excited at the opportunity to create something, rather than turn up to play with cars as they imagined was the reality of Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond and May.

That’s a shocking new lineup! To my mind Chris Harris will be the only one who actually knows anything about cars from the new line up

The last series was just about Ok with Reid, LeBlanc and Harris and they had some on screen chemistry developing

Personally I find Flintoff annoying.

Don't forget that Freddie is one of us, in that he has at least ridden mountain bikes in the past. I was speaking to Rob Penn after he rode across the Amazon Basin together with FF on rigid MTBs to highlight the issues over there, and he tells me a nicer bloke you would be hard pressed to meet. Good luck to him I say, I will watch and make up my own mind then, not now.

Don't forget the pedalo as well - he has a wealth of experience with pedal-propelled vehicles, making him automatically better than most people.

Plus he is experienced in Top Gear 'writing rude words on stuff' type japery.
