Is anyone else fed up with Feb'?
Every year, it's the drab, grey, wet, not-much to look forward-to miserable month.
Can we get shot of it once and for all (birthdays not withstanding)?

February is great - fact

It passes quickly [quicker than January anyway] & then it's March

All months are great - don't wish your life away, you only get one (or so I'm led to believe)

No! I have seen an amazing amount of wildlife in the last couple of weeks, even though the weather has not been great. You just need to look a little harder for beauty or whatever floats your boat.

As much as I hate winter and cold weather-I've had loads of fun by riding with cycling budies from local group.

Forget the cold and enjoy the chats, weather and winter views.

Just wear warm/wicking gear, get a roadbike with mudguards 😉

Its my birthday in February,so to abolish it i wouldnt get older, and would have to wait for ever for a bus pass and a pension, if we can still afford them when i retire, especially if the con--servatives get in in May.

I'm riding just as oft' in Feb'. That's completely missing the point.
It's a nothing month.
It's not cold & crip like January. It's not the promise of Spring that March heralds.
It's the Darlington-Stockton connurbation of the calendar.

I say: delete it.

I'm with uplink. It's short and it means summer's on the way. Saw my first snow drops this week and rode home without lights. Bliss!

Better than Middlesbrough - Hartlepool then?

Well you could delete it but then March will just slide forward into its place and you'll be moaning about March, you live in the uk presumably, all but about two days will be crap weather wise!

"It's short and it means summer's on the way"

? In the same way that in January you're past the winter soltice and thus summer is on the way? That's long-range optomism if ever I heard it! Good luck with your Lottery tickets btw!

IGM : It's touch-and-go there I agree!
RS - Too literal!

I hate February so much that I've just arrived in Australia for the month. And it's raining.

I have to think like that. As my dad points out every year at the start of May that the nights start drawing in next month 🙂

Breakfast time: I couldn't find any frost/damp averse tarts so rasberry pop tarts are the order of the day.

For those is OZ. It's a gloomy grey day here, heavy skys and somewhat threatening. On the upside, it's not raining and I'm out on the bike shortly.

(in thses gloomy months I wear yellow tinted ride-glasses as it adds a look similar to early evenings in September - I call them my Prosac Glasses!)

I'm with SFB. No not physically, we wouldn't fit in the same chair very comfortably.

Had a fab ride today across Blanchland Common and Hexhamshire Common. Still big patches of ice and snow over the less exposed sections and places for it to drift. Sometimes very muddy but great 😀

We have about 6 family birthdays including mine. This year I have been ill or abroad for all of them. I propose a more specific ban.

Ban February in Switzerland.

Just completed my on line check in for tomorrow mornings flight.

Pre-booked 5 days parking in Short stay for £77. The week I forgot to pre-book cost me £234 from Monday morning to Friday evening!

February so far has been lots of sunshine and cracking surf (although went flat yesterday). Let's get rid of December and January and have 3 Febs instead.

yesterday at Drumlanrig was perfect. If that was an advert for February I'd make it every month of the year. Based on past 2 summers I'd 'delete' June, July & August.

Today, the trails were so chewed up, so sopping wet, so dire I went out for a 3hr road ride on the mountain bike - a first for me. I simply could not face another mud-fest with little or no training value, ploughing my way trough rutted bogs and mud. After all, any fool can be cold, wet and frustrated / hacked off & besides I get that twice a week anyhow on our Tues and Thurs 2-3hr weekly night rides.

I enjoyed the road ride as there were so few motorists out - clearly they too didn't like the look of the sleet and rain!

Bin February!

I think it's great. A proper winter for once and in our neck of the woods more snow than I can ever remember. Fantastic. I'm not really a great fan of the cold and much prefer warm weather but to have had some variety this past month or so is great.

Mrs BigJohn has decided that she wouldn't drink wine with our meal Mondays to Thursdays for a month. She chose February because it's the shortest. I offered to join her. God, I hope it's not a leap year.

It's alright for you lot up north n stuff, but spare a thought for us southerners, with more gloopy mud and clag and stuff to bind your bike to the surface. This is the time of year you have to pedal down hill. ITS NOT RIGHT!

But I have seen snow drops, and dafs are coming.

Wished I lived in the hilly north, where the rock just gets wet, not 'sink to your hubs' muddy

I'm a feb fan.

the days get noticeably longer every day.

you start to see signs of spring, lambs, daffodils, sometimes bluebells etc.

it's a short month, meaning more money.

next month = clocks forward

biking resumes in earnest for me.

altogether, ace, one of my favourite months actually.

as someone said, I'd like more months - best not to wish your life away - you'll only get one stab at it.

Tim - it's only 'cos you've been ill! All months are good, and as said above it's getting lighter - the skies were just lightening up this morning for the first time this year as I left home.

The mud is cr@p i agree - but it's a good blast for the legs in the thick stuff.

The only bit of the year I'd ban is the last Wednesday in January - now THAT is depressing!!

and as said above it's getting lighter

but to me that's effectively negative thinking, implying the short days are bad, when in fact they're inescapably tied to the dropping of crunchy autumn leaves, and the stark forms of bare trees, to the biting frosts that transform mud into temporary rock (and what's wrong with mud anyway ? - it can be fun too!) and the delighful snow that vividly picks out the forms of the mountains and turns familiar terrain into an exciting challenge! The cycle of seasons is just that, an endlessly turning wheel of change to be celebrated and enjoyed not whinged over 🙂

I don't change my riding patterns because of the weather (except when it's windy and above 8 Celsius - that's windsurf time). I've been out 2 evenings and 1 day just about every week this year.

If we did get rid of February could make August 59 days? Better to have more days in the summer surely.

Don't tell the Aussies.

Mine too! I like February. January is worse than Feb, it's dark when I go out to work and dark when I get home (when I'm working basic anyways), at least in Feb it starts to get abit lighter later and I can tinker with my car/boat without using lights. Bring on April though, as soon as the temp hits 12-15 degrees'ish, the wakeboard gear comes out 🙂

Its fantastic to have seasons and changable weather. You never know whats comming next week, and its good to have a break from certain activities.

Not climbed outdoors for 4 months but looking forwards to dry spring to get out there again.

The changes also make me ride and discover different areas. Muddy local trails, well just go to the Lakes, and leave the Dales for spring/summer when things dry out a bit.

If you suffer from SAD, then the best thing for you is natural light, so even more of a reason to get out there and ride. The exercise adds to the benefit too.

February is the worst month for SAD.

Unless you are working from home or just w/ends, then all your riding is going to be in the dark - as well we know, so no help there either!

No, just look outside, and do the same tomorrow and the day after and tell me that isn't typical of February! The mud is thick, gloopy, cold and has no upsides to it. It's the culmination of the worst of the winter withnout the hard, clean frosts, there are no bank holidays to look forward to, no national festivals to be eargely anticipated.

Room 101 for February - for all eternity!
