If I was interviewed on a wednesday, and told by the interviewer that they would call on thursday. When should I follow up if I don't hear from them?

I'd drop an email over towards the end of the day or tomorrow morning.

In those timescales, I'd drop a note on the Monday politely asking if there was any feedback.

If I didn't hear from them I'd call them on the Wednesday.

I've just done similar. Had a good chat with the recruitment lady 2 weeks ago and she said she'd be in touch the next day about next stage with their director last week. Have heard nothing since. If it had gone badly, I wouldn't mind. But it felt positive all round, and a good sounding company.

Definitely follow up and keep in touch. And ask for feedback if you don't get it.

I had this last time I was looking for work. In the end I worked on the basis if they wanted me they would be in contact, every one I chased up was a dead end, in my experience if they don't come back to you when they say they will it's either someone senior can't make a decision or you are out of it.

I chased once and got the job.

MD admitted later that this is what got me the job. He was sitting on the fence and caught up with other things.

If you do it right it's not going to lose you the job.

Try to give a good reason for your "impatience" without it coming across as a threat.

I never heard back from about 50% of the interviews I had, even after chasing them up.
Pretty poor showing considering the time I spend preparing for them, especially if they want a presentation.

I now turn down interviews if they want a presentation. Not quite cheeky enough to send them a PO first yet!

@yourguitarhero I went for a role at White Stuff a few years ago, at the 2nd interview I had to prep and deliver a presentation. After the interview the manager asked if he could keep and use the presentation, I said yes. I didn't get the job, I wish I'd charged them for my work.

Yes definitely follow up on it. I was placed on a reserve list previously and when another of the same role came up and I wasn't contacted I made contact with them to find out why etc. My insistence and conversation with one of the members on the panel got me the second job and I soon prooved my worth by showing time and time again that I was better than the first person they chose. Yes they may fob you off but if you're interested in the job you have nothing to lose by following up on it.

"Hi, I had an interview with yourselves on Wednesday and was advised you'd let me know the outcome on Thursday. As it's now Friday / Monday I thought I'd better check in with you just in case I'd missed a call or email somewhere."

I suppose the other thing is,

If you haven't got the position, you're unlikely to make it worse by asking.

1. Definitely follow up. As others have said, done well you'll lose nothing but potentially gain a lot.

2. Presentations. I've had to do presentations for the last 3 jobs I've had (all Project Management). I think it depends on your field but I see them as a necessary evil at this point and would be pleasantly surprised if I had an interview in the future without having to give one.

Re: presentations, I don't get the resistance if it's a part of the process.

We had a bloke who complained that he had to do a 2nd presentation during the multi-stage interview process for a very specialised position. It was an opportunity for him to demonstrate that he had the domain expertise that we needed. He sulked and didn't do it. He knew he was competing against himself as he was last man standing but was still required to complete the process and show us how good/bad he was.

He didn't get the job. I think he'd been rumbled as there was a faint whiff of bullshit every time he spoke.

“Hi, I had an interview with yourselves on Wednesday and was advised you’d let me know the outcome on Thursday. As it’s now Friday / Monday I thought I’d better check in with you just in case I’d missed a call or email somewhere.”

if you used "yourselves" when asking me, I'd immediately tell you that you hadn't got the job 🙂

Every single job I have been offered I have had the call the same day as the interview - true story! So now I move on in my head if I don't hear immediately, and I always tell people on the same day if I am offering a post.

The time to be making contact with the recruiters is before the interview.

All just my opinion!

If you liked them and would take the job if offered, no harm in asking when you'll hear.
My last job, the HR department were (possibly still are!) not the best at actually offering people jobs when the decision makers have said yes. I'd had to enquire whether I should be continuing with my other interviews before they pulled their finger out.
Then a few years later they interviewed a friend of mine for a job she was ideal for - I asked the relevant manager if he'd found anyone for the post, he said yes and confirmed it was her, and I let him know that she'd not had an offer - he shot off towards the HR desks straight away to put a rocket under them!

I was there many years and HR had quite a lot of good people but this was always happening!

Re: presentations, I don’t get the resistance if it’s a part of the process.

The assessment for my current contract comprised sending my CV along with a 15 minute video answering a couple of questions, which was organised by the recruiter. Proper performing monkey stuff. No interview required or offered.

Possibly depends on the role? And the 'why'?

If you want to see someone present, just give them a slide deck and some notes and half an hour to read it though. You can quiz them on their knowledge of the subject by asking questions about it that weren't in the notes.

At the other end of the scale there's companies that just expect free work.

It's one of the things that annoy me most in the world, applying for a job and not even getting a blanket email BCC'd to however many people saying thanks but no thanks.
However the ones that seem very positive in the first round and say that the "Technical Director" or whoever will definitely follow up in the next couple of days to then blank you entirely and ignore all emails/calls seems a lot more personal

So you interview all candidates on the same day and have always been interviewed on the same day as other candidates? And I guess you are in the lucky position of being able to go from - good interview to offer immediately, without having any formal process to go through? Our offers are all issued by HR - they frequently take >24 hrs from "approval" to a verbal offer.

As for presentations - if the job will involve presenting information I will often ask for one because its really difficult to fix a bad presenter once you've hired them - I've found this quite important again in lockdown as people's ability to present/communicate on teams/zoom is different from F2F; particularly if they don't read the audience interest - or stick to time. Its also a useful way of digging into real subject knowledge. If I come away having learned nothing new its probably a sign that I don't want this person!

I sent what I thought was a good follow up email on Tuesday, still haven't heard anything.

I think I might try phoning today, what do you reckon? If a good idea Should I phone the office or the interviewers mobile?

Can't recall a single time we've interviewed all the candidates in the same week let alone day! Normally takes 2-3 weeks to schedule seeing a handful of candidates.

I suspect I have been lucky - niche profession and small interview lists, on both sides.

Anyway - did you get the job?
