Always had a fascination with space but haven’t ever had a telescope.
Seems this fascination has rubbed off on my lad, so thinking a telescope might make a good gift (for both of us).
I’m interested to know if any of you have got into staring at the night sky and have you stuck at it?
Or did you get bored with it so now it’s gathering dust?
Any advice on what to get?
Some brief researching says the Celestron Astromaster 130eq is a good one to start with. I dont mind spending up to about £300 if it’s worth it.
Or might get a used one of ebay.
Any advise welcome 🙂
Telescopes are ace and if you have an interest in the night sky they can open up lots of objects you wouldnt normally see.
First thing ill say though is dont expect too much, all the fancy pictures you see are ususlly folk taking long exposure photos and stacking them. I know that sounds bad but you will be able to see lots of new things just not in the detail of people's pictures.
For 300 quid youll get a new 8" dobsonian with some change left over. I bought most of my stuff from astrobuysell.com/uk where ive not had a problem with anything and theres a buy and sell section on stargazerslounge which is pretty good and its a very friendly forum for all things astro.
The eye pieces you get with the telescope will be fine for starting out but a bst starguider is a good upgrade once you figure out what you want to do.
Ill warn you now though...... you think bikes can get expensive? Youve seen noyhing yet!!
I got an Orion Apex 127 Mak Cass nearly a year ago. Nice scope (not that I know much) but the bl00dy tripod is far more important. Get something that tracks or it’s pure frustration. The time taken to focus and the sky (well,us:D) move so fast.
