I KNOW its been asked on here before, but can I find it? Can I buggery!

Anyway, I have a need to bring a currently uninsured car back from the Midlands to the Isle of Wight so I can sell it for a relative. Its taxed and MOT'd currently, but not currently insured, but its kept in private grounds.
Whats the cheapest way of doing this? As I only need it to be insured for me for the trip back.

If you Google "temporary car insurance" then you'll come up with number of options that will cost £20-30 for a day.

I suspect that you could, technically, also buy a normal annual policy, drive the car, then cancel under the 14-day cooling off period - assuming that you hadn't made a claim. The insurer could charge an admin fee for this, but they're not allowed to profit from it so it should be reasonable. Some insurers may not charge at all.

I recently did this, the insurer charged £20 admin fee plus 1/365th of the policy per day I was insured. Couldn't find one with no admin fee, but didn't look too hard.

Fair enough - you can't beat the voice of experience 😉

To be honest it felt a little like I was scamming someone, but I didn't really see an alternative.

I'd swapped my insurance onto the new car, and just needed cover while I sold my old one. The new law that means cars must be insured whether being used or not is a bit of a sod for private car sellers 🙁

Anyway, if you're going to scam someone it may as well be an insurer 😉

Hmm, its gonna need to be insured for a couple of months anyway, due to the, latest gov rules, you MUST insure ANY vehicle unless its SORN, regardless of where its kept. Sigh....

Some insurers used to have a small period to sell your car after you have bought another -but you had to be fully insured in the first place.

Try a local broker or even test drive insurance?

Why don't you just SORN it and then unSORN it a couple of months later? or is it not that simple?

If you have insurnace on another vehicle then temporarily insure a second vehicle. I did that when my car was in the garage for a few weeks, cost about £25 a week.

Basically this is an elderly relations car which she can no longer drive. It was MOT'd last week and is taxed until the end of July. Im not the owner, but will be selling it on her behalf. She's in the Midlands, Im on the Isle of Wight.
Im thinking of just getting it insured for 2 months, by which time it should be sold.
I don't currently have insurance in my name, so it would be a new policy.
Anyone want to buy an Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Club Hatch Auto??
