We're staying at a holiday let in Lower Largo next week. I'll likely not take the bike as I just get grief, but this is not the thread to explore that issue...
So I then wondered about taking a light rod and some lures and feathers, the hope being to catch a couple of mackerel for a barbecue one day. Does anyone know if a) there are any fish in the Firth at the moment, and b) likely places to fish from?
Ta in advance
It's been years and years but the firth you just used to chocker the shiny things in and pull it straight back out laden with the things.
The east Fife coast is just rocky outcrops beaches and fish and chip shops there are loads of places you can get out to throw string at the water.
It may be evident from the above I don't and have never fished. But I am a fifer
The harbouris down to 2/3 of its size but you should be able to dangle your bait as you will still get a fair depth at high tide. It probably belongs to the Crusoe Hotel but the locals are trying to raise money to repair it
I've no idea about Mackerel but 50 years ago it was flounders you used to see lying on the sandy bits
On a hot summer day we used to jump in even though it smelt rank due to the rotting seaweed and maybe other things but it helped to build up the antibodies
Yeah, last time we were there the storm-damaged harbour wall in the village was cordoned off for elfin safety, but it was easy enough to circumvent the barriers. There'd be probably 10-15ft of water off the end of that at high tide.
A bit of googling this morning suggests the breakwater at Methil Dock might be worth a try, and also the harbour walls at Burntisland, although the articles mentioning those were all 15-20 years old. Failing that, I suppose I could just throw some money at the fish merchant in St Monans.
I'd not eat anything caught of Burntisland or Methil simply because of how contaminated the water will be round there. The waters around Dalgety Bay are radioactive!
I'm not sure if the fish are good at Elie but that's a similar distance from Lower Largo but much nicer, and has a harbour wall and some cliffs where the water should be deeper. It'd also be an OK place to bring your family - I don't think they'd appreciate sitting waiting for you to catch fish in Methil.
Quite, I’m not sure why you would want to go all the way back to Burntisland when you are out at Lower Largo. Head east, loads of people fish off the harbour walls and rocks in all the East Neuk villages. I don’t myself but they must catch stuff given how many are there, unless it is just an excuse to go and drink beer…
You could head to Elie chain walk and fish off the rocks there, fish the incoming tide up to high water. If you're bored you can do the chain walk.
Plenty of rocky sections to fish from, or harbour walls. Signs of the mackerel in will be flocks of gulls over the water
There are plenty fish merchants st monans and anstruther way, super quality and fresh.
Tight lines!
I’d not eat anything caught of Burntisland
I saw a rat the size of a cat when i was up there 20 years ago
Burntisland, Bowie was inspired to write Future Legend where the fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats
The Elie area is looking favourite at the moment, then, thanks all. I found CodHeadBob's site earlier, and he describes the harbour wall, Lady's Tower, the lighthouse, Kincraig/Chainwalk and Ruddon's Point all around there. Moving around between those should keep me out of trouble for a couple of afternoons. All I need to do now is fetch the rod down out of the loft.
Will report back on catches (or otherwise) during the week, or possibly when we get home.
If it’s sunny, kids will be throwing themselves off the harbour wall at Elie.

Well they would be if the miserable buggers hadn’t put up a fence to try and stop them.

Mackerel are migratory I doubt they are in one place long enough for local pollution to be an issue / you could catch one that was 30 miles away yesterday.
I promised to report back. Couldnt be arsed to drive over to Elie in the end, even though there was nothing doing from the Largo pier (apart from quite a lot of drifting green weed). I tried 3 afternoon/evening tides, each time for a couple of hours, without any success at all. Still, it kept me occupied for several hours.
There are defo fish further out in deeper water as there was a chap, visible from our cottage window, in a small boat pulling them out in 1s and 2s on a couple of afternoons. He looked like he was jigging feathers quite deep. Judging by the seabirds following him, he was gutting and cleaning them straight away for lobster pot bait.
