I have a shit old Dell mini laptop and I want to use it for skype. Only skype - literally nothing else
It has a throbbing Intel Atom n270 processor and very nearly 1 jigawatt of RAM just waiting to be unleashed

Have just installed W10 on it just to see if it worked and it does run but really, really slowly

Would linux of some variant be faster?

What variant do I want? (easy to install and use - my perception of linux (have never used it mind !) is of neverending googling and ****ing about with the kernel or something)

Lxqt or similar. Or just Google lightweight Linux distribution.

Try Skype in browser as well as separate app.

Can't remember the last time I ****ed about with the kernel (ie custom build of patched kernel).

Magic, thanks both - googling for options (screen res is very low, seems to be an issue)

I think it'll have to be in browser as the app says it's 64 bit only

Does it really have to be skype, or will another video calling tool do? Skype is quite demanding compared to others IME. I’d go with lightweight Linux distro and use whereby or google hangouts in a chrome browser.

Ubuntu would be my choice. You can just install skype via the installer thingy.

Alternatively, build a cut-down optimized distro yourself using Gentoo. And then switch back to Ubuntu after a few days or weeks.
