Can anyone recommend a bike shipping service, one that can be trusted and can hire me a proper box / case ?
I used Sherpa before but they seem to have stopped doing bikes and seem to offer a luggage shipping service.

Ideally I want someone that knows bikes, can cope with bikes and has a decent box, or proper hard case for hire.

Theres plenty of places that will rent you a Evoc box/bag or similar. Not sure about shipping it though. Be aware of course if you ship it separate to you the default position will be VAT and Duty is payable.

Ah, bugger. So it would be treated as an import if it doesn't go on the plane with me 🙁

Be aware that if my sister’s experience is any indication, anything shipped from the uk to southern Italy to an individual rather than a business may take up to six weeks to get through their customs process. She lives in Bari and has told the whole family not to send her packages unless absolutely necessary as it takes ages and costs her a fortune in vat, duty and fees

It can take that long for a business as well, sadly. You can get lucky sometimes, and it be much quicker, but you can't promise anything to the recipient in terms of delivery date. Italian customs is a mess.
