Yessss.
Have that pic pinned to my office wall to remind me. I really dislike the dark.

About time too.
We just need to 'spring forward' 1hr with our time pieces at the end of February rather than the end of March for a greater appreciation of the afternoon sun. 🤔

It usually means that the mean bad weather is about to start.

As much as I agree, I do still kind of like solo riding in the dark this time of year.

Embrace it all. The darkness is just the promise of light to come.

175km in the cold yesterday made me yearn for the sun 🌞.

It was a particularly dark and lonely walk to work this morning. It was like the middle of the night and it feels like everyone else is already off for Christmas. Thursday afternoon can't come soon enough.

I miss summer terribly at this time of year, even after 21 years of happily calling the UK home. I’ve never loved summer so much. Oddly though, as the world seemingly goes to hell in a hand basket, I find it immensely reassuring that the earth is still going about its business around the sun. (One less thing to worry about, I guess.) Also, there’s no beating the relative silence and solitude that winter on the hills can bring. Yin and Yang, I suppose.

Take heart Sharkattack. It may feel like everyone is already off, but for some, that’s because they’ve copped the night shifts this weekend, and it’ll be a working weekend like any other. It’ll be a nip of port and some cheese for my crew mate and me on Christmas morning, before heading home to bed, coming back in and doing it all over again. It is what it is.

Miss it more than usual this year for some reason, been off the bikes through injury for a few weeks and feeling very lethargic, definitely some SAD kicking in from too much WFH and not enough fresh air.

We moved house back in January and are now surrounded by airfields, when out on the bike in Summer there are always light aircraft and vintage things buzzing overhead. Immediately made me think of that Sheep and his pals. Bizarre really.

i love the winter. its the best riding conditions all year! you can see where you are going, you can spend most of that time sideways and you get to dig features and it not fall apart!

summer is just brambles and plebs on trails.

winter biking is the best.

I look forward to this thread and that picture as much as the date and inevitable climb out of the dark.

Looking forward to the xmas break, heavy workload recently has meant a self imposed hiatus which will be over and i can crack the lights out and chase the darkness, yay!

I agree with your right to think this way, but you are definitely wrong.

The best time to ride is late April, early May. The trees are budding and sucking every inch of moisture out of the soil, so the ground has dried up and features that you build don't sink into the ground. It's warm enough not to lose extremities but cold enough to keep the plebs away, and also the flies and midges down here. The trails aren't yet overgrown. And everyone is filled with optimism for the coming season, rather than being jaded for finishing the year slightly heavier, slightly less fit, and still not having had the balls to ride THAT feature. 😀

Thanks @matt_outandabout , that's a pretty dusty (in a good way!) Mint Sauce strip and to you @jj55 , I love that pic too.

Anyhoo, we had a nice trundle down to the nature reserve earlier today to watch the birds come and go and after a pretty shitty week it did the both of us some good to get out and do some stuff that's good for the soul.

Fish fingers, chips and beans for tea tonight too 😎 Happy solstice everyone, be excellent to each other 😋

Takes a couple of more ems before we see the difference though. I’d gladly leave the UK through Dec & Jan. like living in a bloody cave!

The only good thing about bad weather is all the dickheads crawl back under their rocks and have a break from creating problems.

In the last couple of years we have had police at Goyt, Macc Forest and a well known jump spot in the middle of nowhere. Not a single arrest BTW. And now hardly a soul to be seen, it only seems to matter in summer!

Yup. On my shitty 10hr shift the great part is the 6 mile flat, on or off road commute. I can take the train if it is truly offensive weather but the ride bookends a crap day with joy. And it is quicker...

We were out this afternoon on the MTB in the slop to celebrate the shortest day. Roll on light evening dusty trails and watching the sunset in the pub.

This thread has lightened my mood considerably, printed the picture and stuck it on the wall behind my rickety desk buried in a corner of the bedroom. Given me the impetus to stop faffing with the bike and just take it to the lbs to get it sorted. Thanks.
