Yay!

I can deal with the cold. I can put up with the rain, but these short days that are over a few hours after waking really get me down....

Already planned a little fire in the garden with my nephews (7 & 4) to celebrate whilst letting them know they're getting nothing for Xmas.... Well, from the GF and I at least... There's a shedton of crap under their tree.

I love this thread each year! I enjoy lots about the winter but the dark is by far the worst aspect. Roll on the light evenings!

Will be heading up a hill for my usual solstice celebration at sunrise tomorrow, since it's closer (and less celestially significant, we're both off work) but it's still nice to know that we've reached the shortest day(s).

The dark drag to the shortest day doesn't seem to have been so bad this year, but the knowledge that the days will start lengthening is always a huge mental lift for me.

I thought it was three? Or is that closer to the equinox?

same here, I think the past few weeks despite the cold has been better being brighter weather than our usual gloom and rain, but roll on those longer, sunnier, warmer days, I reckon the real turning point is around mid-Feb, at least up here in the far NW.

it's good to know the days are lengthening, but for me the best time is around the spring equinox, that's when the days are lengthening by the most - it's only a minute per day now but in mid March you get a really noticeable increase.

Can't get here soon enough, whilst I quite like the 'real' cold when everything is crisp and bright, the endless, mud darkness and rain of a typical English Winter's day does get to me a bit and it's always good to know that things are slowly turning in the right direction again.

Lovely pic that gives a momentary sense of warmth...

Before 3 months of seasonal lag blow a knifing horizontal sleet into my face and my bike grinds to a halt in axle-deep slop.

Well, in southern Tasmania, it's been an awesome solstice.
Trails were mint & there was still light in the sky riding home from the pub at 10pm.

I cut a few of the pages of that calendar and had them framed on my bedroom wall. I wish I knew where they went.

Not before Big Blonde Brilliant Brexity British Bloke Boris gets another go.

And yes there are elements of the Tories that are batshit mental enough to be discussing this without wearing spinny-round bow ties and massive shoes.

It’s great, but we have the longest month of the year coming soon.

I hate the 60 days of January. Just want to stay in bed.

I hate our wet and muddy winters. Give me the last few weeks of cold and frozen earth.

I havnt been working which makes the winter worse, but I did have the summer with my kids and dog.

I have just landed a job with 45 days holiday inc BH's, I am still pinching myself. Next winter I might have to find some winter sun the ride my bike.

I'm struggling this winter, constantly tired, low mood.
My kids say I'm like this every year, I need to keep a diary to see if it is seasonal!
Going to try and get out for a walk or ride every day in the daylight until I go back to work on the 3rd.... hopefully I will start to feel better.

@Simon it's hard isn't, especially if you work indoors and don't see the sun from one day to the next. Your plan sounds good. Might be worth considering vitamin D supplements too.

Yep. Go to work in the dark. Work inside all day. Go home in the dark.
Past couple of weeks I've been going for a 15min walk at lunchtime but it's probably not enough to make a difference.
I've been taking vit D since beginning of 2020.
Will see how I feel in the New Year.

I like this -
SOLSTICE WOOD by William Neill
SOLSTICE WOOD

There is a spinney on the ridge

and I am certain

that it was always there.

When the winter solstice comes

and a red sphere falls behind trees,

I like to think

I am not entirely alone

but that other eyes, across time

are with me, and show the same pleasure

that this is the shortest day

as the druid wheel of the sun

rolls swiftly towards springtime.

Already planned a little fire in the garden with my nephews (7 & 4)

Give them each a stick, about 3' and they'll happily sit there the entire night poking the bloody thing. You wont have a problem with them getting bored. Kid/fire/stick no other entertainment needed.

Same 😕
I've managed to get out for a lunchtime walk occasionally. I don't suppose it makes any significant difference to your vit D intake, but I was surprised at just how much difference it makes mentally, particularly on a sunny day. Genuinely felt refreshed and more with-it in the afternoon.
