Me and the wife are in the process of moving somewhere around North/West Sheffield, ideally with riding from the door, and there's a couple of houses in Deepcar that have prick my interest.
Having lived in Leicester all my life I don't know the area so wondered if anyone that does know the area would share an opinion, thanks 🙂
Up the hill a bit towards Bolsterstone is lovely, but Deepcar itself is in a deep valley that always seems pretty dark and gloomy to me, and its not the most salubrious area.
Some other thoughts: close proximity to reservoirs so great for a bit of OW swimming if that's your bag, and riding is obviously brilliant (but muddy). I'd say if you can find a nice street, and don't prioritise gucci cafes/bakeries etc within walking distance, it'd be a decent enough place. But in the vicinity I'd look at Oughtibridge, Worral and Loxley in preference.
I’d look at Oughtibridge, Worral and Loxley too but I suspect prices will be a touch higher there.
There is riding from the door anywhere in Sheffield, especially in the West side.

🤣

🤣
Salubrious, I had to Google that, my vocabulary obviously isn't up to scratch 🙂
So from the 3 responses, I get the impression it's not the nicest place to live. The places listed are also on the list of places but there's nothing on the market at the minute that meets our requirements.
Will have to go for a drive round at the weekend after riding up that way.
There's nothing wrong with the place, its just not very inspiring. Add to that you're a 30+ minute drive to the middle of the city & 25+ minute from Ladybower meaning you're half an hour in the car from fulfilling your in Sheffield & good riding criteria.
You would benefit from driving round a good while. Areas of Sheffield vary a lot and change quite quickly. A useful thread was started on here about a year ago (by IHN?). Property market is tight and 'guide price' often means plus 5 or 10 per cent.
It'll only take 30 mins at rush hour, but I kind of agree. Deepcar is probably good for riding Wharncliffe from the front door. Everything else that's local to Sheffield (Eastern Moors, the Dark Peak, White Peak) is a drive away. It'd be easier to get to Manchester / M6 from Deepcar / Stocksbridge than from other parts of Sheffield. Depends what you're into, I suppose.
Bolsterstones looks (visually) nice - we looked at some houses there. It'd be good for road rides (Strines) but not ideal for MTB.
@thepodge getting into the city isn't a requirement. I work from home 95% of the time and the office is in Leicester. The wife covers a patch from north Notts to Barnsley and across to Doncaster in Boots stores. The riding from the door would be Wharcliffe, which I love. Appreciate it's be 30ish mins to Hope etc. but it's better than the current 1h25min drive 🙂
@BillMC it's a good point and something we will be doing. Also, I'll try and find the thread.
I wpuld look at Sheffield West fringe. Just so you know what it's like. There are some great areas with good access to the Peak and riding
I don't live in Sheffield but my son does and I had a year there as a student
I would look at Sheffield West fringe.

Grenoside is close by too and I think has more long-term entertainment value than Lady Cannings for a quick no-car after work blast.
Plus if you're in the professorial belt (S10/S11) that ride out up through Endcliffe park gets old really fast.
A useful thread was started on here about a year ago (by IHN?)
Nice of you to remember, indeed I did 🙂
But I've just looked through a long list of threads I've started, and it's not there 🙁
Oddly it sparked me up to think about moving only to discover my mrs was thinking exactly the same. A year later.....

Over a year later and I'm still contemplating the move so will watch this thread with interest
I long since gave up. (West) Sheffield house prices are just bonkers.
Moving there from the (more expensive) South makes a lot of sense… but hard to move there from more reasonably priced areas in the North.
Grenoside village is very nice and agree Worral and Oughtibridge are well worth investigating. Oughtibridge is getting expensive these days though.
I live in an area called Birley Carr which is just down the road from Greno (and just up the road from Hillsborough). Cheaper than all of the above yet the Peaks are still a few minutes drive and from my front door I can walk and be out in the country within about 800m and you would never think that was the case from looking at the location.
If actual city centre living is not a requisite then some of the villages just north of Sheffield are nice - Thurgoland, Penistone etc.
South Sheffield has equal easy access to the Peaks but is much more expensive.
I used to live on the Middlewood estate and to be fair it was great for riding Wharncliffe and Greno, plus easy in to town (not a requirement admittedly for you OP).
As others have said I’d look too at Grenoside village, Oughtibridge, Worral etc. Top of the hill in Deepcar is nice near the golf course though that’s a bit of a slog at the end of a ride (keep you fit though).
Currently in Totley myself which is great for Eastern edges but prices are daft round here now, if I were looking again I’d be looking a bit wider, maybe High Storrs, Lodge Moor/crimicar Lane or Crosspool depending on budget.
You didn’t say if you had kids in tow either OP? Sure others can advise on schools in the area.
I live in Worrall and its great. Wharncliffe on the doorstep an an 8km road ride to the Dukes Road which is a backdoor into Derwent reservoir.
There's is nothing wrong with Deepcar or Stocksbridge. There's a mixture of housing and good/bad areas, There's a bit more life there since fox valley opened and a decent pub in the King and Miller. If the long mooted tram train out to deepcar/Stocksbridge ever goes ahead, I think house prices will rocket and the whole place will get a lift.
Worrall and Oughtibridge are really nice, They have a good village feel and decent pubs. They are in S35 which is alot cheaper than S6 and S10.
Edit: also don't forget about Wharncliffe side. Again, a mixture of houses but not bad.

I can tell you on pretty good authority not to hold your breath on that one. It’ll be at least a decade if it happens at all.
Thanks for all the responses, a lot of the places mentioned are already on the radar, it's just there isn't much for sale in budget at the minute. Will also have a read of the other thread, thanks @mark88.
A house has come on in Oughtibridge tonight which we will hopefully get a viewing on.
Oh and no kids with zero plans for them 😁
I'd love to have Wharncliffe/Grenoside on my doorstep, I love the variety of trails in there, old school, new school and scary deathtech. Plus it seems to ride well all year round as long as you don't mind getting filthy.

If it’s the house I’m thinking it is on Rightmove @fathomer, it’s in a good location off the main round and high enough up the hillside not to be in perpetual gloom in winter (the ones right down on the main road are often very shaded). But it’s still just a 10 minute pedal up to the bottom of the trails in the woods. Win win.
It’s a lot better since the Coop was built I suspect too as before I don’t think there was much in the way of food shopping apart from the village store, no real need to drive in to Hillsbrough now.
@tuboflard thanks for your input. The house came on Rightmove yesterday and is pretty cheap, which makes me wonder why but it looks nice enough. And does seem to be up the hill.
I've had a flick through IHN's old thread and their budget is a good chunk more than mine, though my requirements are a little less.
Yeah, aiming for the West side of Sheff is all well and good as far as riding aims are concerned, but it’s a bit moot if your budget doesn’t stretch that far. I can’t think of any areas that have access to the peak and aren’t crazy prices at the moment.
I’d guess Stocksbridge would be pretty decent for getting onto motorways for your wife’s travels. For West Sheff it’s a PITA to get to any motorway really.
Mum's in Penistone - and seems like a really useful place to be - railway into the city, easy access to the Mway, the trail along the old railway goes past the bottom of Wharncliffe (with literally zero gradient to get there), a couple of decent bars (and several shady pubs to be fair), a bottle shop, tescos, great butcher, THE best chip shop. Seemingly reasonable house pricing...
It's telling that many people in Sheffield don't seem bothered about back gardens, it's all about being outside. If you can find a spot that reasonably meets your needs in terms of access to riding, shops, pubs, motorways, eateries, parks, not too hilly, parking, then I'd be a lot less bothered about how much bricks and mortar you get for your money. We settled on about 8 streets and were lucky enough to get a spot (offer in Sep moved in Dec) but nothing has come up since that would have met our requirements and circumstances.
Yep I’ve got good friends in Penistone who moved there from Sheffield and love it. Great independent cinema too (if that’s your thing). Probably better for road riding than mountain but easy enough to get to Greno and Wharncliffe, depends how significant that is to your decision making though.
I live up o'er th'ill in Ecclesfield and can ride to Greno/Wharncliffe for riding. It's great. I also like Deepcar and would say it's generally an improving area - the pubs are good and if you're not on the main road it's nice and quiet. The further up the hill to Bolsterstone the better but if you can find a house in Oughtibridge that's in budget then snap it up quickly as things are really not hanging about on the housing market up there at the moment.
Plenty of people to ride with from either end of Wharncliffe and they're all good people in my experience. Good luck getting the house you're looking for!
forgot about the cinema - its next to the awesome butcher! i'd agree road is better from the door - but a realtively easy pedla to wharnecliffe. Seems to be lots of decent byway/bridleway/terrible lanes tho for gravel type stuff almost from the door. The little hipster bar/brewery on the high street is good - although seating for approx 6 is awkward a lot of the year!
I think you said no kids? If so I think penistone is a great shout. Did my go training there. Lovely place. People we know who lived there with kids found it a bit too isolating. Poor public transport, forever running them around to places etc. one of my colleagues lives at thurgoland which is also great for tpt to greno but very small. Wouldn’t have like to have been a teenager growing up there. Also penistone is in barnsley council area not Sheffield in case that matters to you.
We looked at grenoside and Oughtibridge 22 years ago when we moved as I work north of Sheff (J36) but stayed in s10 as more friends around. Appreciate house prices have moved on since then.
