On the way back from Edinburgh we called in for a night in Sheffield... The city center on bank holiday Monday was very grim! There's a very big homeless problem in the centre with people begging on most on the main streets, and loads of junkies around. Has it always been this bad ? I live in London and see this daily in central London, but Sheffeild seems to have a really big problem currently.

Homelessness is not just a London problem, it's everywhere. Saw people on the streets in Carlisle at the weekend

Definitely increased in recent years in Nottingham and Derby - Covid measures to help accommodate them are ending, it will get worse as the economy sinks after Covid and Brexit.

I noticed that too when I visited Sheffield many years ago. It seems like nothing has changed.
We have quiet a few in North East city centre but in Sheffield there seem to be more.

I work in Sheffield city centre, well I did until lockdown, now I WFH. Prior to lockdown I can't honestly say that I noticed a huge number of homeless people, but I may have just got used to it. I don't know if it's increased since lockdown? Saying that looking back I'm now thinking there was the guy who lived in the carpark, the one under the arches and the various spice heads that hung around the castle street and the old market. So yeah I think I just got used to it.

Oddly when I lived up in Edinburgh about 20 years ago the number of homeless people there came as a bit of a shock. Maybe I was just young and naive? Prior to that I used to regularly go into London and Edinburgh seemed to have a higher concentration. Don't know if it's just because it's tourist central and the city centre is fairly compact.

It was never as bad when I first moved here in 2008. Been getting steadily worse over the years. Not sure if spice has made the aggressive begging etc worse but there do seem to be more asking for money outside supermarkets etc. It may be more visible now due to the numbers of unconscious people in the streets. Not sure how the 'everyone in' covid policy affected it or whether it's continuing. Unfortunately I have little hope that this government will improve the issue of homelessness and can see it getting worse as suggested above.
