Steep tech - Wharncliffe and Win Hill.
Long rides - the peak. Hope Valley, Eastern Moors and anywhere around Ladybower

What are the best tracks in Wharncliffe, are they all like the ones in 50/01 videos or are some a bit more normal

Just have a look on trailforks, IIRC it roughly goes from trailcenter-type near the car park, steep and sketchy, then fast and open as you get out the woods at the far end.

You won't need it, for a start Sheffield center is horrible to drive around anyway. You can start a Peaks ride from the center by riding up Ecclsehall road and out of the parks up Potters Clough, round the back of the reservoir and you're on Stanage edge. Or head left at the top, past the Lamas and you're at Lady Cannings, which is a quick blast over the roman road from Blacka Moor / Dore which has more fast/steep/sketchy bridleways to ride.

There's also Parkwood or Bolehills BMX track for an evening's riding if you want a break from natural stuff.

really? there were 3 in wharncliffe that anyone told me about when i was there. the steel city DH is basically a pumptrack. the one to teh right is a bit more natural but less used and not amazing. there was another at the top above steel city but that was shut for maintenance.

Greno woods over the road is amazing though. if you like super steep rocky tech DH.

a local would probably be able to show you loads but as a outsider on my own it was tricky to find anything decent (and i`m from teh south downs!!). until i chatted to a decent local rider.

You’ve got Wharncliffe and Greno mixed up there. Greno has the 3 official trails, Wharny is the other side of the road.

I wouldn't wear shorts in Lady Cannings, seen a number of deer in there.

Ladybower reservoir has some awesome steep techy but you need to know where to look for the good stuff as its not obvious.

Because of ticks? Does it get very overgrown on the trails? I've only ridden there once and don't remember thinking it any more liable to ticks than any other woodland.

I would have no concerns about riding a bike in shorts in lady cannings. There’s no overgrowth to hack through.
I’m a big fan of the rivelin valley. Helps that it’s a 10 minute pedal to access from my house, but between the downhills off the back of bole hill park/bmx track and whyming Brook where you start to head towards the peak via stanage pole there are loads of trails, mostly cheeky but never any aggro as long as you obey rule number 1. From groomed berms to steep natural stuff, easy to do a 10 mile loop with 1800 feet of ascent and never be more than a few minutes away from “civilisation”
All this depends where in Sheffield you are staying of course, I expect every wooded hillside has bits known only to locals.

Ticks? Yep, I'm probably being over-cautious but one of our mob has just had to have 4 dug out of his legs (not from Cannings). Just one less thing to think about when out for a blast.

There are deer in lady cannings, blacka, totley moor, I saw one crossing rivelin valley road once- it ran across a few yards in front of me when I was in the car. My legs are usually bleeding at the end of a ride but not from ticks!

It’s sensible to be careful with ticks

But where I live, in Bedfordshire, I couldn’t ride off road at all if I avoided areas with deer
