Following on from the squishy floor mats thread I've got some heavyish equipment going into my workshop so think it would be best to beef up the 1" timber with something else.

I was thinking of something to provide a waterproof layer (eg the roll of thin white foam you get for laminate flooring) with some 12 or 18mm ply on top painted both sides with garage floor paint. Any better suggestions?

For the walls I would like to keep the timber look so was thinking some rockwool or PU foam in between the framework and then some pine cladding? Anything I mount to the wall be be mounted to the framework so the cladding doesnt have to be structural.

Having dropped a bar bell through my workshop floor a few times, I ended up with a 4x18mm Ply base, which seems to be holding up.

Yep, screwed in a block. A bit unusual, but it's for Olympic Lifting so dropping a bar bell from over head height - punched straight through a single sheet of 18mm HW ply, which did surprise me a bit. Seems Ply isn't that good at handling impacts.

Crikey! I was thinking 1 layer of 18mm would be pretty tough. My ususal yard wants £50 for a 2.4x1.2 sheet of 18mm, I make it 4 sheets + 1 cut lengthways in half to cover a 16x10 shed. Tempted to put a layer of OSB underneath too - exterior grade with some PU paint on.

Find your closest Selco builders merchant, £30 a sheet Inc vat for wbp or £27 for structural ply
