mates asked me to help set up his daughters new HP laptop rather than pay to let pc world load mcafee anti virus and anything else theyd probably push onto it.
ive opened it up, put in her email address and password and it looks like macafee already installed, although not fully functional. ive removed it through add/remove progs and been back in defender, downloaded the av update it suggested and now we have a full row of green ticks in all sections, av, firewall etc.
ive also installed chrome, made it default browser, and downloaded malwarebytes in case she wants to check that side of things from time to time.
anything else youd suggest to put on there? a free antivirus such as avg, komodo or whatever in case she ever needs a 'second opinion' from an av, but not have it running all the time?
she'll be putting her student version of office on there later this week i think.
thanks
don't put AV on, put drop box on it, show her how to use it, so she's got a back up of things/ can access files from anywhere.
Then just just let her use it.
A month after she has been using it. Do a full clone of it, so if it breaks, you just need to load the clone back on.
Have a second admin account and her as a user on it.
Set up Google Drive/Dropbox or something else as the default document folder so stuff is backed up
AV Windows own is fine, anything else will just fight with it
Have a second admin account and her as a user on it.
how do i do this and why? is it some sort of back up?
Set up Google Drive/Dropbox or something else as the default document folder so stuff is backed up
it prompted to set up dropbox with 25Gb of space so ive got the ball rolling with that.
thanks
you need to be admin to approve installing crap, safeguard from installing shit that corrupts it

Make sure the default docs folders are pointing there or make sure she knows to use the dropbox one
Pretty much covered it .. Also go to settings /programs and features.. There's probably a few pointless apps in there to remove that came bundled with the machine.
If you're feeling particularly helpful then go through all the settings in settings and turn off all of the 'send usage statistics' and such like.
Also open task manager and go to the startup tab and disable anything non essential. If in doubt Google the entry and make a choice... Allow things like touch pad etc. Disable things like 'candy crush auto updater'.

ok, but why a second admin? at present shes the only user, an administrator. so total control over the pc. if nobody else in the family needs to use the pc then why a second admin, with her being a user on it?
why should the location of user folders be changed? and to dropbox? what if she binned dropbox at a later date?
thanks matty, if i get time ill do that.
cheers

At the moment windows prompts for installation, making you enter an Admin User credentials is a step to avoid people just clicking yes in frustration and installing something bad.

Have a read of the link, I prefer google drive as I can add other folders rather than putting them in one place.
Things like My Documents, Pictures etc. are just diverted file locations, they can exist anywhere but point to somewhere. If you point them inside dropbox then the default save locations for all files end up in the cloud and are backed up.
BAsically it means in the event of losing it or breaking it you can be back up and running in the time it takes to download them.
If they are not default chances are they will not end up backed up.
That 25GB will only be a trial period btw, dropbox is only 2GB(max 4GB for free.)
probably better using google drive tbh, you get 15GB on that for free.
ok, but why a second admin?
I assume they just meant second account with that as admin.
With regards to online backups/.storage. Chances are the MS office will come with 1tb of Onedrive space. So job done there.
No reason to put dropbox or google drive on it when One drive is already integrated and she already has an account setup. I would be getting rid of the bloatware rather than adding more

I was going to say, Onedrive is built in so no real reason to use anything else.

Also open task manager and go to the startup tab and disable anything non essential.

Don't do this. Messing about with stuff in here is a quick ticket to becoming another user annoyed because windows updates fail. Leave it alone, this step hasn't been needed since at least 7.

Add O & O Shut Up 10 , a tiny file that doesn't install as such and gives you pre-set privacy options to stop W10 and apps calling home. It uses a traffic light system to help you decide and is configurable by each user, although certain changes are system-wide
Personally, I wouldn't have her main user as an admin. Just makes it a bit harder to make a mistake, and once everything is running, you don't need to be an admin.
I'd also just use Edge, but that's up to her and what she's used to.
File history is also useful, copies a version of every file she changes every hour or whatever you set it to, gives you a backup of old versions.
than you very much. ive now handed the laptop back to her and told her the various options you mention.
she will instal office on it this week, have a play with it and let me know if theres anything she's having problems with or wishes to change.
thanks a lot for your help.
Spyware Blaster is worth a look. It's a passive tool (so doesn't conflict with anything else) which blacklists a load of known bad IP addresses in whichever browsers you have installed. You have to pay for automatic updates but the free version is fine, I manually update mine when I remember (which is about every six months).
I tend to set up the settings so the pc isn't too sluggish. just by adjusting the performance settings via control panel>system>advanced system settings and adjust performance to 'best perfomance' but then tick 'smooth edges of screen fonts' and 'show thumbnails'
that way it doesn't do all the weird animation stuff and appears to work more snappily.
