Back lower tooth suddenly became sensitive so after a few days of reasonable discomfort, went to dentist. He says the crown's not v well done (despite his surgery doing it quite recently!) and says probably need a root canal (£690) plus a filling (£600). WHAT! And then charged me £80 for the consultation and a fiver for a pack of antibiotics.

Grrrr. So any remedies for easing sensitive tooth. He seemed pretty unsure that a root canal is def needed.

Surely root canal surgery includes filling the bits that the've filed out no?

They did a crown without an RCT?? That doe snot sound right...

Also, if it was recent, do they not put a warranty on it? If it was recent, surely they should repair the shoddy workmanship?

Also that sounds very expensive for root canal and crown. Think it should be closer to 800 for private but with a sensible lab doing the cast for the crown. Anyway, as above, its usually a serac inlay first.... based on my limited experience of one root canal plus crown and one serac as avoidance for potential root canal.

You can always just have the tooth out by the way.

Blimey. I'm currently having some root canal work done on a tooth (previously crowned, so he's going in through the crown) which has so far involved 4 trips where he reams it out a bit then puts a temp filling in. I've had 2 courses of antibiotics (but no anaesthetic as the root was already done 10 years ago) and the dentist's bill is going to cost me a grand total of £43 plus antibiotic £14. Goo old NHS and good old living in the Midlands where stuff's cheap.

NHS all the way. Private dentists are no better than Dick Turpin. Have a glance in the staff car park next time you visit....

Get it out.

Just spent 2 weeks in agony thanks to a badly done root canal that infected under the crown. Luckily the tooth wasn't in the "smile line" so I got the dental hospital to extract.

In all honesty, if it's not a visible tooth, why go through the discomfort and expense to save something that is likely to flare up again?

Shysters!
I would haggle!
Recently quoted about £900 for a new crown and a RCT.
When I pulled a face the price of a root canal came down from £400+ to £250
Then a dentist in the same practice (that was "not taking nhs patients") offered to see my wife & kids on the nhs after they registered initially as private patients. I had words with him and now I'm having the whole lot done for £208
Doesn't hurt to ask.
