So I have an old PC that I would like to send from Southern Ireland to my son in London. It's possibly worth about €500, maybe less in the UK. I guess this would be subject to customs duty? If so, how would I calculate this? If I were to send it from Northern Ireland would this circumvent the customs duty?
In theory yes there'd be duty - as in, when you go to post it at An Post they'll ask the value and write that on it and it'll probably get duties based on that.
But it's personal belongings: you could mark it up as "he left it last time he was at mine", or say it's worth £10, to get round that.
I always thought from the north it'd avoid that, but I know now the border being in the Irish Sea makes things a bit less clear - I'll watch this thread with interest!
My mum sends me all sorts in the post from Derry, never questioned. If I send stuff to her though, via my uncle in Derry, the post office demand I complete a customs declaration. It’s as if it’s a total balls up. Whodathunkedit?
