I have some old bottles of port which, frankly, are wasted on me (can't drink anymore) and I'd like to sell them on. Given that they're worth a fair bit, I'm not sure how to sell them - do I contact a specialist retailer, or auction them, or gumtree... ?

I'm sure his nose will bring him here in good time.

😛

However, I'm sorry I can't help with selling them on...I'll gladly come round for dinner and demolish them for you though. 🙂

Similarly I have 11 bottles of 1983 vintage. I'm quite keen to sell them but wouldn't know where to start...

If you can avoid them falling into the clutches of port fiends, there are 2 basic ways of selling via fine wine merchants:
1) Sell them through a broker for a % of the sale price (you get the money at a time when someone else wants to buy)
2) Sell them to a broker for a higher % of the value (you get a bit less money at the time when you want to sell)

Google fine wine merchants - they're all pretty similar.

The bottle will normally need to be in a bonded warehouse and the warehouse will manage the transfer of ownership.

The other option is to talk to your local fine wine shop and see what they say.

Will a broker / wine merchant buy single bottles - or does it have to be a whole case?

I have:

1 x Graham’s Malvedos 1995
1 x Niepoort’s 1985
1 x Fonseca Guimaraens 1976

Some Googling reveals total value of around £250 - not sure I want to go through a broker for that amount. Might have a hunt locally for a wine merchant and see what they'd pay. Alternatively, I might just ebay them...

Read that as vintage porn, twice.

Plyphon,

But where have they been kept?
Unless they have been cellared properly they have little value.
I know somebody who stored vintage port in their loft. It baked in 30°+ temps in summer then sat in freezing temps in winter. It's now probably undrinkable.
