of the bike variety

now my hair is thinning, mine doesn't fit like it should.
I've bought the next size down which fits better, however I now have an expensive helmet which is too big for me, never had a bump etc, should I sell someone a bargain?

what's the STW consensus on this?

You can sell it, and say you've never had a bump on it - but its up to the [potential] buyer if they believe you or not.

cut the straps off and bin it.

Regardless of the safety concerns re: secondhand, old helmets I can't imagine wearing someone else's sweaty helmet pads and straps however much they've been cleaned.

If someone is prepared to buy it, it's worth selling.

I'd happily sell it with a clean conscience.
But I'd not be confident to buy it.
Therein lies the problem.

Give it/sell it to someone you know.

A used helmet is no more dangerous to another person as it is to you.

However the new owner will need to trust you enough that it's not had any bumps which would warrant replacement.

Keep it as your winter helmet, with a nice woolly hat underneath. After all, you'll need something to keep your head warm šŸ˜‰

STW consensus

selling etiquette is something not to be taken lightly.

As long as it has never had a bump and is undamaged and clean then it shouldn't be a problem. However, be prepared to sell it at a much cheaper price than what you paid for it.

yes but more vent holes in a helmet is good thing, in boxers is more 'vent' holes a good thing?

I'd have no issue buying a used lid - any significant impacts will be obvious and as was said above, if the original owner had been happy to use it why wouldn't I?

I'd just be careful about who I bought from and how they presented it but I don't see it as any different to any other product and my bikes are 90+% pre-loved.

Slightly different. I doubt the Op has had to resort to taking a dump in his helmet. It would drop through the vents anyhow

I've friends who have sold helmets on ebay/STW and got more for them than they thought, so give it a go. Caveat Emptor of course, but you as seller don't have anything to lose unless you have a friend/relative who would benefit from a gift more.

Buying a s/h helmet says more about the buyer than the seller... For the climbers here; s/h rope anyone?
