My mum, who’s in her late 80’s, is ready to give up her car. It’s a 12 yr old Suzuki Jimny auto, with only 20k miles on it and WBAC have valued it online at around 5k once I deduct a chunk for dents etc.
Trying to work out the nuts and bolts of the paperwork and can’t find in their FAQs. I will call them during the week but knowing that someone here always knows… 😁
The V5 is in her name. She and I are the named insured drivers and it has tax and MOT till end Feb. I have Power of Attorney for all her affairs.
Was planning to book it in next weekend and drop it there assuming the deal is ok. Question is, do I need to take her with me as the named person on the V5 ? This would be a pain but can be done if needs be. Payment can go to her bank account, for which I have details as I manage it online for her, or mine if allowed (suspect not)
Anything else I need to take, or prepare .
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried punting it privately. WBAC tend to chip really heavily with damage.
A private owner maybe less arsed especially if its going to get used
Im in a similar situation with my elderly dads car and Power of Attorney. My experience is that it will depend on how WBAC acknowledge the PoA, they might not understand it, or that you have the law on your side. In fairness the vast majority of institutions I have dealt with via the PoA have been totally fine, only occasionally have they got a bit arsey.
You could register yourself on the V5 although I appreciate that takes time. It just shows you are the keeper of course, not the owner iirc.
Id be tempted to punt privately also, or even a local dealer.
edit just reread your comment about payment into her a/c. Yeah I think that would be ok
Duncan, no, haven’t looked and the prices being offered by WBAC and others so high right now. It comes up initially at £6.5k, but it has a big dent in roof shoulder corner where she reversed it into a skip a few years back, and a few other dings, so I reckon they’d end up at around 4K, which is fine for a hassle free deal. The money will go to her investment account and she is quite comfortable.
As there’s a big dent on the roof shoulder?!? WBAC will knock of a massive amount, you’ll be lucky if they offer you £1500 with a dent like that.
Going to wbac will be a total waste of your time.
I sold my Dad's old car to WBAC, and they were completely switched on to the PoA - suspect it's pretty common.
I was completely honest about the dents (of which there were many) on the online form, and they gave me what they'd promised (which wasn't that much, but I just wanted rid).
Interesting to know, my folks will be unloading their 11 plate 30k miles i30 sometime this year - at last!
When I was in a similar position last year, I advertised it on autotrader and sold it in less than 24hrs. A local dealer came and took it away for the asking price without all the bollox associated with dealing with WBAC. Defo worth trying first IMHO.
I sold my mums SEAT - drove it to the local dealer and sold it in 30 minutes - bank transfer on the spot.
Commenting to bookmark it as I suspect I'll be in a similar position in the not too distant future...
FWIW, I sold an old car of mine (many years ago) to WBAC and for the complete lack of hassle, instant bank transfer etc it was well worth it. Drove it there with the bike in the boot, unloaded it and rode home, money was in my account by the time I was back. Saved dealing with tyre-kickers and time-wasters and "can you knock £100 off it mate"-ers.
If they do muck around on price then definitely sell elsewhere.
A work colleague used to also own a second hand dealership and said they never struggled selling Jimnys - they were bizarrely popular with pensioners and ladies who just wanted them for reliable bimbling around and were happy to pay top dollar.
Hi,
Weirdly I had to sell a car last year for both my father and father in law. Without a PoA WBAC would not deal with us, but Motorway were happy to and we got a great price with them for one (prestige) car. The other (a cheap runabout) I sold through Facebook marketplace. We had loads of idiots contact us, but sold it for the asking price to a very nice guy who showed up and paid for the car within 5 minutes of seeing it.
Good luck.
WBAC are owned by British Car Auctions and will give you the value it would auction at plus all auction fees etc, id take it to your nearest 2nd hand car dealer and see what they offer first.
OP, you do realise you can add the damage of the car at the quote stage right? Which will give a more realistic price and so long as the damage you added at the quote matches the real world damage then they'll offer that.
It's so easy for folk to slam WBAC but then don't read the quote and assumptions and fail to follow the process that allows for the damage input.
Roof damage selectable options - less than 3cm, more than 3cm or more than 30% of the roof area.
Thanks all, very useful. We sold my late dad’s similarly bashed Passat estate with them 3 yrs ago and felt it was a fair deal given the circumstances and condition of the vehicle. Will make some enquiries..
Other places offer similar online quotes followed by visit to site. Arnold Clatk offered a bit more than wbac for My dad's car when he stopped driving.
If it's 12 years old then most dealers won't be interested in it - so WBAC are a fair bet. As mentioned above, describe it accurately on the online form and they'll give you an accurate price 🙂

I cant imagine you would have a moments trouble selling that on Autotrader or Facebook Marketplace.
Very desireable to some people. cracking little runabout/greenlaner/sh*tbox.

Main dealers won’t, but there are plenty of dealers selling these sorts of cars, who do you think buys all the cars from WBAC?
I would strongly advise you go private sale with it. They have a cult like following and massively sought after at the moment. It wont take long to shift. From someone that sold a rusted greenlaner jimny that failed mot on chassis rot... Mine had 124k on it, different coloured bonnet and still got just north of 4k for it
^^^^ good to know, will have a think once I get initial valuation. Thanks all
Cheapest 10 plate Jimny I can see on AT is £6500 it says excellent condition but has 112,000 miles on it after that its into 8K+ territory.
danmac is right they have a cult following though perhaps the Auto is less desirable I don't know?
Depending where you are, I mightbe interested
am in Glasgow area. I have booked it in with WBAC for Saturday and have updated with the damage etc, it's now showing at 5.5k..
facebook/ebay will have it sold within days...probably for several thou more than WBAC
Jimny have cult following
Is it still insured? Could you get some of the damage repaired under the policy to bump up the value? As it won’t be replaced there’s no worry about increased premiums.
