selling my car on fleabay and I have had an email from a woman requesting a sale but is only willing to pay thru PP.
this is the email I got after I first responded.

will be paying you with my PayPal account because it's attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make payment. If my mode of payment is accepted just send me your paypal email address,(Paypal ID) so i can pay in right away. Make sure you get back to me so that i can make the payment. I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been made, so no shipping included.

Scam or should I accept payment?

Paypal allows people to pay through paypal using a credit card, so it is possible.
If you receive payment, make sure you withdraw it and have it in your bank before you let the car go.

Private courier makes it sounds very dodgy though.

she doens't seem very forthcoming with her location as I have offered to deliver myself for cash on delivery but she's insistent on Paypal and a courier.

The courier claim sounds a bit scammy but as above provided you don't release the car until the money is in your account then I don't see the issue.

I sold a car recently on ebay and stipulated a 10% deposit by PayPal - balance on collection in cash.

i thought paypal was safe, sort of not reversible as they dont release your details to the buyer and act as a middle man. However, the very formal wording of the offer would cause a few alarm bells to jangle...."mode of payment"...sounds like a standard offer email that might be pinged out to any number of sellers. Can you access her history? Might give you an insight in to her intentions?

Hmm not being forthcoming on location is a bit dodgy to be honest. Maybe buying the car for nefarious purposes and doesn't want the payment traced?

PayPal can be reversed can't it if she says that she never received it? Even if you take the cash out there is probably nothing to stop PayPal charging you 🙁

I take it you haven't been exposed to many such emails, HC?

Put down that bargepole and walk away. Now.

Nah, first time for me, I have asked them to send me money first and I highly doubt I will give them the correct address

even though it is clearly a scam, can't she complete the transaction as a buy it now and pay through ebay-paypal. You don't need to relaease your email then?
or it might just be best to steer well clear... 😥

well, I said I would accept their offer and I would send them my address once money was tranferred

I got this pearler of an email back:

I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem with the picking up,I got an email from my agent..i taught i included that in my previous email.he said he won't come and pick up the item unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time ,and my pick up agent head quarters is in the Nigeria and all commission payments made for pick up, from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the Nigeria and the only form of payments they accept is money gram money transfer and i tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't bring along, and there is no post office(there is usually a money gram section in have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i will include the £400 they charged to pick it up and take it my home(1st class treatment), to the payments i will send through paypal. After i have made the payments and it has been confirmed by paypal, i will need you to help me send the £400 to my pick up agent through money gram money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a money gram agent in most post offices or online at www.moneygram.com .I will be making the payments shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done.

That's verbatim!

Seems fair enough, he doesn't seem to have any problems trusting you with the 400GBP. A bit of trust goes a long way.

How does the hold work then? PayPal I presume?

I had the same scam offer via autotrader a few weeks bck, almost exactley the same rubbish. I replied that I only except campal transfers. Safer for me and him.
Id except 15 camels via campal (and attractive ones with long eyelashes, not those ugly ones with bad teeth) and his 'courier' could drop them off with me when he picked up the car.....

Havent heard back from the guy yet, so I firgure hes just sourcing some suitably attractive camels... 😉

at least I did ask! I know a few people who would be taken in by it, but not me and my clueseauesque detective work!

I have reported them to fraudaid.com
