I'm selling a Kindle on Gumtree. Potential buyer has been in touch via text wanting to buy it. We have agreed I'll post when payment has cleared, he is going to PayPal gift.
I know the risk of using PP gift as a buyer but, as a seller, are there any scams or issues that I need to be aware of?
not sure - if buyer pays the fees, would it look the same as a PPgift to the seller? (buyer could then claim back, presumably)
That is the sort (possible) issue that I was thinking about. I know PP seems to side with the buyer if they raise a dispute.
Paypal gift is no different to a bank transfer or handing over cash. If there are any fees involved, hes not using gift.
So will I be able to tell if he has paid by Gift or with Fees?
If there are any fees involved, hes not using gift
agreed, but does the seller get a message saying "X has paid you 20 quid and has also paid the fees on this transaction" or just "X has sent you 20 quid" - the latter possibly exactly the same as what you'd see if it was a gift (I don't sell much stuff so I don't know, hence the question)

If he pays a gift using credit card I'm pretty sure there are fees.
Last I checked only debit card (or straight from bank account) and paypal balances could get you a fee free transaction. If buyer pays those CC fees, the seller won't know, you'd just see that amount as a payment.
Hopefully your paypal account isn't called franksinatra, so paypal won't see this and go, ooh look he's 'illegally' using a gift payment! 😉
I was just googling and the "credit card gift" comes up as a potential scam as the buyer might claim that card had been stolen and so arrange a chargeback through their card provideer and which apparnetly Paypal will process
So I'm more confused now then when I started!
However, I am selling two kindles through the same Gumtree advert and the buyer only wants one of them. I take comfort from thinking if the buyer was on a scam then he would take both.
If the buyer pays with conventional Goods and Services (I.e. not Gift) then this will be apparent in your transaction details when you log in to PayPal.
Sp payment has just landed in PayPal. It lists as just the buyers name then Money Received. No mention of either Gift or Goods and Services.
Can I conclude this is Gift?
'ere frank, tell me about this second "spare" Kindle. Might be interested, esp if it's an old one with buttons

More likely a payment for your Kindle.
Arf!
The unsold one is brand new and boxed standard Kindle in white.
£45 posted, I accept PP gift!

With a swipe-screen presumably, if it's new. Need one with buttons really, Soz
yep, swipey screen (on account of it being 2018 and buttons being sooo last decade)
