You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Someone has just offered to buy the number plate that came with my car. He hasn't yet go the car he wants to transfer it onto so plans to put it onto Retention.
DVLA seems to let me put it into retention and still own it.
OR
Transfer it to another car with another owner.
Any ideas on how I can sell the plate and he can put it directly into retention?
You have to put it on to retention then sell it. When there were local offices you could do it all at the same time but now you have to di=o it in two steps.
Okay. I will let the buyer get the details of the process but you think I will have to put it into retention and get the original plates back on my car and then transfer the Retention plates to him, right?
yes, when you put it on retention you will be advised on the plate details (year of first registration) to go onto your existing car. You get a form which you can take to Halfords or similar and get the plates made up; you have I think 3 working days to do this, from the date of making the change on the DVLA website.
Once on Retention can he then just buy them and swap them over to his name?
The retention document is a certificate for the registration, which can be transferred, via the DVLA online. I ‘think’ you’ll need to prove details of the vehicle it is going onto though, but not entirely sure as haven’t tried to do otherwise. We have moved my wife’s plate every time we buy a new car, most recent last week.
The physical plates just go in the bin.
Just had a look on the DVLA website and the V317 seems to allow me to put the registration on Retention AND change who has entitlement to the registration at the same time.

I think that does what I need, right?
That looks about right, make sure the money is cleared in your bank before submitting the form tho…
