Hi all, I have a vehicle with an interesting number plate which it looks like I can sell to one of the many online plate buying companies. The vehicle was originally registered with said plate when it was new. How to I apply for a replacement age related plate from the DVLA? Any pit falls I should be aware of before I agree to sell the plate?
You're probably not selling it to them, they're simply agreeing to sell it for you in return for a fee. They'll probably overestimate the value 🙂
AIUI you put the plate on retention, then it belongs to you and not the vehicle it's attached to. You get the original reg plate number back, get some plates made up and stick them on your car.

You don't have to put it on retention first; when sold you just apply to transfer it to the new owner. The DVLA will then issue you with a new age related plate.
I'd not like your chances of finding a buyer...especially as it wasn't deemed sort after enough to be a private plate in the first place.
As above. I did this a few years ago a 2nd hand car I bought came with a personalised plate in the NI format plate GIL xxxx.
Put it with one of the resell agencies. They reckoned it was worth 800 quid then came back with an offer for 400! 400 was better than nowt. The agency gave me the details of what I needed to do to apply for a new age related plate. Very painless and it was a for a couple of quid at the end of the day!
