Selling a low-ish value used car. Where? How? Any advice?

It's been a while since I sold a car (I normally just drive them until they won't drive any more) but I've decided that it's time to get rid of the one I have.

So, obvs, I'm asking on a bike forum. :o)

I only use the car a few times a year, tops, so it seems a bit pointless to continue paying out for it. And I could definitely do without the annual hassle of sorting MOT, insurance, and all that.

Anyhoo, it's 13 years old, with a full, fresh MOT on it. Looking at Autotrader and Ebay, the same car is selling for anywhere from £2.5k to nearly £5k. I'm realistic about the price, and expect mine will be very much at the bottom end of that range. Whatever I get for it will go towards another electric cargo bike, I think.

So, is it just a case of listing the car on Autotrader/Ebay and waiting for someone to get in touch and turn up with some cash? Or is there more to it than that? Or a better way to do it altogether? What kind of scams should I look out for? Am I going to have to deal with a thousand idiots? Will I die?

Any advice?

Ta!

Check if Motorway/We Buy Any Car etc are offering something you'd be happy with and if so, do it. Takes all the faff out of selling a car and having to deal with idiots turning up on your doorstep.

Ha! Last time I sold a car, it was actually a bit of a niche interest van and I *think* that went on Ebay, probably to one of about 15 people in the UK who were interested in it. But that was about 10 years ago. All the cars I've had have just been driven until they've hit my max budget for getting them through a test. Or given away.

I'm just not relishing the idea of a stream of people knocking on the door, Facebook Marketplace style.

Yeah, I'd looked at WeBuyAnyCar and they seem to be offering about £1k less than I see the cars going for on Autotrader. Maybe I'll just take the hit.

Sold two on ebay recently for 1 and 1.5k and both times people turned up within 2 days and took them away. Also had people message me saying if the buyer doesn't show up they'd take it. I think the shortage of cars means you won't get messed about too much.

They were poor condition too. One was a non-runner and the other had a few issues.

I stuck mine on at 99p, 10 day auctions ending Sunday eve.

EDIT - WBAC wouldn't have touched mine due to the faults the cars had, so I don't know about that.

Yeah - tell us what car it is!

Only used a few times a year means it could be something fun! 🙂

...or an old Micra in beige.

What is it?
Make, model, mileage, general condition?
List it on the forum classifieds.

I'm 50 and have "sold" 1 car in my life, to my cousin, for  significantly less than book price, as he had no money

1 was given to the local fire station to practice chopping up, becuase it failed the MOT and the scrappie wanted me to pay them to come and take it away

The others (3 of thejm by my count) were just traded in against whatever I bought. So, no, not everyone is Arfur Daley

We found shifting an older, higher miles, big diesel was slow and challenging.

There are some 'optimistic' prices presently.

Our old car was sold to WBAC for £4.5k, 8 months later there's a dealer asking £9k for it...

Promise this wasn't a stealth ad!

Honestly, don't get your hopes up. :oD

I've posted about it before - when I first bought it about year ago ( https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/can-you-fit-an-mtb-in-a-qubo-bipper-nemo/ ).

I'd just given away my big van to my brother because I wanted something a bit smaller, but I think I went waaaay too far in the opposite direction. While I can get my bike in upright, wheels on, I can't get much else in. And for some trips, we actually end up needing to take two cars (long story). Which is ridiculous. And hence why it's not getting used much at all. Gah.

Are they going for that, or are they just up at that?

There's a few up for that. And there's there's a couple of sold/completed prices on Ebay that suggest it's not a million miles off. There seems to be a steady turnover for them on Autotrader - and they have a price-comparison-ometer thing too which is in the same ballpark.

Think I might try my chances on Motorway.com first, tbh. Seems to be the most hassle-free option.

I know. I took issue with what I thought was an unnecessarily rude response to the OP. Then thought better of it. Life is too short 🙂

ambient, find the closest match to yours on Autotrader - model/age/mileage/condition/spec - and that's your guide price.
