For info.
I'm flogging a Garmin gps on eBay and advertised it as having the (excellent and much better than OSM/OCM) Talkytoaster 1:50k topo maps on it. Within 24 hours I got a message from Talkytoaster explaining this contravenes the licence and asking me to remove the maps from the device before sale and remove mention of them on eBay.
My transgression was inadvertent and I did as requested and emailed the guy to say sorry. His maps are brilliant and cheap compared to what the big boys charge so he needs a fair crack of the whip. I just hadn't twigged he licenses them to the person, not the device.
In a follow up conversation he did tell me that I am perfectly entitled to put the maps I've bought onto another device for as long as it's in my possession - which seems fair enough.
Well spotted on his part - I guess he has some sort of software which looks for his product name in listings...
Now, if only bloody Hammerhead would sort out the Karoo 2 to be fit for off road use I'd have a better solution than the miserable Garmin experience. Bought one and returned it but still yearn for it's lovely screen and user interface. Trouble is the damn thing continuously tries to reroute you some bizarre way, and HH refuse to allow rerouting to be turned off by users. The map isn't really a map either - more like a TomTom. Nice eye candy, mind.

Saving an ebay search for "talkytoaster" with email notifications is all he needs TBH!
True 🙂
Given the way he sells the maps probably needs to be on the ball - once you've downloaded the file you could sell/share it as much as you liked as it doesn't appear to have any sort of copy protection or device registration.
I was caught selling an Oregon with his maps on eBay. You can use 'saved searches' in eBay to send an email when a listing contains key words.
I quite like the looks of the Hammerhead. Only thing is, I like the Garmin Explore 2's charging connections which allow watertight charge functionality which would be really useful when charging off a dynamo. The Hammerhead just has the usb-c.
One of the most powerful apspects of the Hammerhead is te ability to side-load android applications so it might be worth trying to install OsmAnd. It's a really powerful app now and just recently has added the ability to connect to some ant+ sensors with bluetoooth sensors on the roadmap. Hopefully they add Garmin radar to the list of ant+ sensors too.
If you do try side-loading OsmAnd let us know how it goes. I'd be really interested.
Also regards talkytoaster maps you might be able to get them working with one of the other android mapping apps. Orux maps for instance works with a range of different map sources.
Quite some learning curve for you, not just to learn how to side-load but those two applications are powerful, but complicated for the newby.
To be honest the Karoo 2 mapping is fit for (my) purpose, which is to have a line to follow with some mapping (and display AXS gear selection and record ride stats). I have a mobile with full UK OS 25 and 50k mapping (also with the route on) if I need detail. The head unit just saves stopping and getting the phone out!
The dealbreaker with the Karoo is rerouting - just look at their forums and they are full of people asking for rerouting to be selectable (ie turn it off) as it just plain doesn't work off road. They've had problems with malfunctions on roads too - rerouting is complex and very difficult to make work well and most folks would rather live without and work out rerouting for themselves. Hammerhead's steadfast refusal to allow user selectability is hard to understand - should be technically easy coding, and would shut up a load of stress and negative feedback they get about it. Their constant 2 week firmware update cycle seems locked into ever more arcane 'features' which often need multiple updates to get working which kind of makes you wonder about how they test an update pre-release. I also worried that given the only way to get routes etc into a Karoo is wirelessly via the Hammerhead software and server (not by cable) if anything happens to the company your device is bricked. That said, they are now owned by SRAM so probably unlikely. Shimano played a little dirty on them by making them remove Di2 integration when they were acquired by SRAM - dirty trick which benefits no one really (as Shimano don't offer a similar product range to Hammerhead).
Shame, as the unit itself is great and the screen is the best in the business. Equally difficult to fathom why Garmin et al don't go for better screens and hardware really as it looks like there is demand for premium products. They do need to improve battery life though...
The guy is a prick. He might “license” the map, but since his modus operandi is to rip off the Ordnance Survey colour scheme I don’t think he’ll get very far trying to enforce it.
Besides, I’ve made thousands of edits and improvements to OpenStreetMap and frankly things like this make me wonder why I do it.
I would be very unhappy if I received a complaint like that. If he attempts to link your eBay sale to your purchase of the map he’ll almost certainly have committed a GDPR breach and I’d encourage you to report him.
