I'm selling a car on ebay. Bloke in Germany wants to buy it, has offered to send a substantial deposit via paypal gift, then will fly over to arrange collection. Are there any pitfalls to watch out for? form filling fro export etc to take care of?
There is an export section on your v5 but i think that would be for the new owner?
I can't really see an issue with paypal gift as a deposit as he wont have protection. Would want paid via paypal though so there was a record of transaction?
Not really. Seems to happen a lot on eBay car sales. Makes sure you sign over the v5 and keep the right bit (think you can do this online now) and cancel the insurance. Everything else is his problem. As long as it is a proper collection with cash not some shipping company and a western union money transfer into an escrow account or the like.
ok, thanks. Couldn't really see any issue with the payment, but wanted a sense check, a quick google suggests I give him the whole V5 and write to DVLA that I no longer own the car, but I can call them to check.
I forget - don't "we" believe that PPgift can be charged back if it's paid using a credit card ?substantial deposit via paypal gift
If it was me I'd say "forget the deposit; bring all the cash" (or better still, get him to pay deposit but bring all the cash and you refund his deposit via paypal when he's paid) ?
Thanks for that info scaredypants, never knew. I'll adjust my plan accordingly!!
Germans pay for lots of things by überweisung (bank transfer). I'd ask for that both for deposit and final payment. You can watch as he makes the transfer online and check with your bank.
Is it something special that is worth flying over from Germany for?
If you've found a buyer & he's booking a flight today... I'd be tempted to forego a deposit and just get cash / bank transfer on arrival
