Had the house valued last night and pleasantly surprised with plenty of similar houses going around here quite quickly, Currently live in Birmingham which is so so busy !!
Now all the kids have left home, we've decided to sell up and move somewhere nicer and quieter.
we've discussed where we want to move to, At first we really fancied a Devon/Somerset address but with prices a fair bit more than up north, its starting to look like Yorkshire is the way to go , its stunning up there and the biking will be a lot better than down here in Birmingham which is a huge bonus 🙂
we've found property's we both like in filey, Humanby and towards Scarborough and we could put money in the bank as well ... work wise im a hgv driver so id have to leave the place im at now as we have no depots anywhere near those areas, but being a driver i think i should be ok finding work once we've moved ?
We know Yorkshires stunning, property's not far from the coasts, house prices good ,maybe too good on very rural villages ? ...
What else have we missed out, tell me what its like living in Yorkshire .....
Sorry for the rambling, im just excited to be finally looking at moving 🙂
Ney lad, ah'm not sure tha'il li' it a' orl .
It's God's country and better than any other county in the UK*. Why would you want to live anywhere else?
* according to people from Yorkshire
Scarborough areas was 62% Vote leave in EU Ref.
You have the correct Riding
stay away from west Yorkshire, basically because it is a ****ing toilet.
Lived in Scarborough for 3 years whilst at Uni, full of chavs and the place people go to retire. Would never live there again.
Filey and Humanby are generally a bit nicer.
In terms of HGV companies, you could always hit up the big companies in the Area, Nestle in York. When I worked there they were in desperate need of drivers. Plenty of work from them I would guess
Biking terms, from Scarb/filey/humanby you're an hour away from Dalby Forest, 90 mins from Hamsterly (descend bike park), same distance to the moors etc. There are some tracks at South Cave woods around 40 mins away. A few local loops through Raincliffe woods and up through the GCHQ Base there which is nice in summer.
I have in laws live in both Hunmanby and Scarborough also Bempton.
Hunmanby is a lovely little village which has quite a few retired people living there so it always seems to be quiet whenever we have visited.
Easy access to the coast and the NY moors with not a lot of traffic apart from bank holidays. Weather wise the summers are generally a bit cooler and the winters milder due to the sea temperatures. If it's a nice quiet life you are after you won't go far wrong with the area, having said that I would be looking at the villages rather than Scarborough itself.
Do it, you won't be disappointed!

where we are looking is borders of east yorkshire and north youkshire if the map is right?
Can you afford to live in or around York? If you can, do that. We used to live in Wigginton and we really miss it and will probably move back when daughter is a lot older.
Lovely city, loads (and i mean loads) of great pubs. Not too big, not too small. Great riding nearby (Dales, Moors etc) both on and off road. Well connected by both road and rail. Leeds not too far away if you want the best gig scene in the UK.
A few hen do's on a Saturday night is the only downside i can think off.
Some lovely places to live all along the east coast as far north as Saltburn (although that can be expensive especially if you want a sea view).
If it was me, I'd avoid places like Filey and Scarboro and go more for the 'quainter' places like Saltburn, Staithes, Whitby, Runswick or Ravenscar.
I live near Driffield so not far away from there. House prices are relatively cheap as long as you like the quiet life! Mtb routes fairly limited but plenty of bridleways if you don't want anything challenging. As mentioned Dalby is the closest thing for trail riding. But there are really good road routes on quiet back roads all across the Yorkshire Wolds. Give it some time to explore them and you'll love it. To top it all Hunmanby has a local brewery and distillery!!
I live in quaint Saltburn and think it's great. Plenty of good MTB riding around as well.
I'll put a word in for you if you like OP 🙂
^^^
yep. If you're set on the coast, better to be where the north york moors roll into the sea with riding from the door. Uphill if you're near sea level but hey. I know bugger all about hgv but would have thought based on A1 and A19 traffic that Whitby would give you access to Tees/Middlesborough industry. Basically I'd go Whitby for the sea or somewhere like Great Ayton or around for somewhere nice with quick access to moors, industry and roads. And bomb across to dales come to that.
Ah, two more jumped in after I started typing this. Or Saltburn, absolutely, for somewhere that feels to be on the up. Used to be Yorkshire...
A friend sold up in Cambridge and shifted off to Aislaby (just out of Whitby).
It's lovely up there, I run to the beach in the morning when we stay and then walk dogs on the beach. The sea 'Never' warms up in my experience, so it's nice to look at but not that useable.
It does get overrun with tourists, there is a big with and without money divide. She has family in the area, but has struggled to meet other people round there.
When the weather closes in she needs a 4x4 to get to her Mum's house (just up the road in Sleights).
There are ups and downs to it, but it's likely to be better than Birmingham in my opinion.
There is very little riding in the East Riding (unless you love flat fen-like landscapes and dykes).
Emmerdale is nice but it's got a high mortality rate.

Wise words from Ton. I’m Yorkshire born and bred. Lived in Wakefield, Huddersfield and Halifax over the years. Couldn’t wait to move away. It’s a shame as the scenery is stunning. Other than that though I wholeheartedly agree with Ton’s assessment.
Not sure if your budget allows it but i like the areas around Pickering,Helmsley, etc. You've got the N Yorks moors on your doorstep but the coast a short drive down the road if thats your thing.Overall,if thinking of Yorkshire, its got to be North Yorks.
I half agree with Ton
If you live in the middle of Halifax or Dewsbury it's grim. If you live 5miles out of town in a small village it's usually nice.
I'd consider Saltburn or Whitby rather than Filey/Scarborough if you're into the outdoors. Saltburn is nice but also close to the industry of Teeside which'll make it easier to find work.
West Yorkshire is largely great, I'm not sure what ton's on about (although he is from Rothwell, which is well within the conurbation where things are admittedly not as nice). I grew up in Holmfirth, which is bloody lovely, my friends grew up in Calderdale which is also very nice. The Colne Valley is nice enough too. Huddersfield is pretty nice for a town of that size, there's some grand buildings there. Halifax is OK. Bradford is the absolute pits, but north of it are Otley and Ilkley which are also nice. This area gives you access to work in Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield - it's easier to find work than out on the coast.
born and bred in wakefield. which as anyone who still lives there knows, has now become a enclave of eastern Europe.
I now live in sunny south leeds. possibly the least desirable area of the oustskirts of the city.
2 work mates live in Bradford, one in queensbury, one in thornton. their commute to work is a daily task of not knowing if you are gonna get killed in a rta on leeds road or get car jacked if you car is worth anything.
one area of Yorkshire I would possibly move to, is somewhere up the colne valley. but friends who live there tell me that it really is like this.
When you say Yorkshire, you mean the Scotland bit of it, yeah?
The Colne Valley is like that. The Holme Valley is peak West Yorkshire IMO - it doesn't get any better.
(Unless you move to Scotland, which I did)
stay away from west Yorkshire, basically because it is a **** toilet.
🙂
Nearer to Lancashire though.
I can’t say that I would find anything appealing about East York coast, there are some nice villages but it’s flat and fields.
West Yorkshire has some brilliant mtb’ing on the doorstep. But as per above is rapidly becoming a dump. Too busy, too polluted etc etc
I can’t understand though if your in Brum why you haven’t thought of Shropshire. MTB’ing isn’t as good as Yorkshire but boy everything else is leagues ahead. It’s kind of what Yorkshire used to be. We love it. Houses are cheap, pollution is low, traffic is non existent.
#cough Lancashire #cough
#cough Lancashire #cough
Lancashire has the same problems as Yorkshire with the added problem of a weird accent

This.. I'd imagine in your line of work you'd want to be in striking distance of the aforementioned larger towns, but not nessesary in one.
I can't see there being many distribution centres etc. On the coast other than Hull really.
Dunno what hulls like these days but it was a bit grim when I was a lad.
As far as the biking goes now , its mostly road, gravel when i can and a bit of bikepacking , so not looking for full blown off roady stuff 🙂 ... some good ideas though , keep em coming as im still looking at properties 🙂

^^^ This^^^
If you move to Yorkshire the main areas for HGV jobs will be Teeside,Hull,Sherburn Wakefield or Leeds.I don't think there's much opportunity for HGV drivers around Scarborough.
How far would you consider commuting?
^^^ Saltburn is in Teesside and is lovely.

You can road ride for miles and not see a car in Shropshire (ok maybe a tractor) I haven’t had the time yet, but the Berwyn Mountains are just begging to be explored on a CX bike. We live right on the Welsh Boarders so I can cycle to Bala/Barmouth etc, or out on to the flat Shropshire plain
Saltburn's lovely, great riding round there too. Guisborough is for middle class refugees from the rest of teesside that think Yarm and Ingleby Barwick are a bit too common and suburban (i.e. don't have woodburners).
Don't just look on rightmove, most villages round there have nice areas and not so nice ones. The nice bits are like Emmerdale but without the murder rate, the nasty bits are like Coronation Street with an Emmerdale accent and murder rate. e.g. Saltburn you can get and 8 bed house in the town for <<£150k, or you can pay double that for a 3 bed out of town. Walk up the road a bit and if you see shit in the middle of the path you're in New Skelton, a bit further and you're in Skelton itself which is (mostly) lovely, a bit further up and you're in Skelton Green, which I've only ever ridden through and never felt the need to stop.
Prestons of Potto are currently recruiting drivers. There's an ad up outside the depot. Northern edge if the NYM is Ok. Stokesley, Great Ayton and Guisborough. Good for MTB.
My brother lived near Malton for over 23 years. He loved it. Malton is cheaper than Pickering. With lovely villages dotted around the Howardian hill. Plenty of riding.
Stokesley and the surrounding villages are very nice indeed, if you can stand being a bit further from the coast. Also have the advantage of much, much better transport links. Means you have other riding aside from the Eastern NYM available.
I think you could rapidly tire of driving up and down the A64, particularly in summer. I'm not fond of Scarborough either.
The advice as always is to stay up here for a bit, maybe even rent before buying if that's practical. Villages are curious things, especially over here in the Dales, and spotting the difference between welcoming and the reverse is harder than you think.
We lived in Rosedale (actually Thorgill) for a couple of years, even for someone who grew up in the country it was quiet! You are also a long way from things - we rarely went to Scarborough (see above), getting over to the Dales was the best part of a couple of hours' driving.
Do you have to be near the coast?
uddersfield is pretty nice for a town of that size, there’s some grand buildings there. Halifax is OK.
Huddersfield used to be nice, pretty grim nowadays sadly. Halifax is kind of forgotten about and the surrounding villages are very Royston Vesey in places. Lots of drug issues, poverty and racist dickheads.
I grew up in Mirfield (which has also gone downhill) and have lived in Huddersfield, Halifax and surrounding areas before I moved to Cheshire. I sometimes miss it until I go back to visit family or friends and realise why I left.
For driving jobs I'd think West or South Yorkshire. Plenty of good Mtbing in either. Yes there are many scummy bits, but you can avoid them. Have you considered Derbyshire? Peak District for riding, Sheffield and Manchester for work
In West Yorkshire you've got the M62 section between Manchester and Leeds, linking up with the M1 and M6.. and ok Manchester is lanks, which will be easier for HGV jobs.
Yes there's some shit holes in w. Yorks but there's nice places too, you've got the Pennines, the peaks and the dales.
If you're a professional driver the A64 past York is hell in summer and in dire need of upgrading.
Not a bad part of the world though, I'm in York and surrounding areas are nice enough, some riding but it's better further out anything ~1hr drive out from the area around York is good riding. Conversely to what somebody posted about York earlier it's full of stag and hen dos or just drinking party's all day every Saturday and parts of the city (read: town with a minster) are getting quite run down, whole swathes of shops are empty on the main shopping strips.
Prices are changeable from village to village over towards the coast so do some digging and research but your money will go quite a way I think. The only real negative I can attest to is transport links once you're east of York being poor.
Do it if you can, I mean it's no Northumberland but it'll do for me for the moment *runs*
Ton has kindly mentioned the places not to go, but West Yorkshire does have some great bits.
Like everywhere there is good and bad. I lived in North Leeds for 25 years (Yeadon to be exact) and it was great. Also lived in bits of Bradford which was also good, but on the whole if going to Yorkshire I'd draw a line above Leeds and Bradford centres and make sure I was going above there.
Some parts of Calderdaler and over to Lancashire are nice but, I think I'd be heading to North Yorkshire if I could. Not quite in Scabbyabro or Brid, but close ish.
Roads are ok up there as you'll be near the A1. Leeds and Bradford are horrendous traffic wise and to be avoided at all costs travel wise.
I've lived in the Midlands now for 16 years and despite going up often, I still miss Yorkshire.
People wise, Yorkshire folk are a bit like STW frequenters. They all have strong opinions and will tell you to your face. Some might see this as hostile, and a lot of the time it is, ;o) , however in times of crisis everybody mucks in, irrespective of differences.
I've lived in North Yorkshire, just north of Whitby, for the last 31 years. My family is from Scarborough/Whitby/Robin Hoods Bay areas.
It's worth coming here for a look but especially where I am house prices have gone up significantly due to the booming tourist trade. We don't really have a high/low season here, its pretty busy year round with day trippers and vacationers. My village is pretty small but its majority holiday homes which in some respects is nice as it keeps the place going however there isn't much of a community here anymore.
If you can find somewhere away from the tourist places then you'll get more for your money IMO.
Saltburn would be well worth a look, plenty of haulage companies in Middlesbrough/Teesside area that could be contacted for work. It also has a train station too which connects to mainline stations (Darlington). There's also places like Great Ayton and Stokesley which are small market towns. Closer to Middlesbrough so easy access for work, great countryside on the doorstep and some excellent riding to be had.
I'm currently in a Hilton in Sheffield as I'm up here training for my new job.
Great place, decent sized city, peaks are literally over the road from where I'm working and the people are unbelievably friendly compared to the Midlands where I'm from. Cheap to live aswell, so I'm told
Unless you're going to bank a substantial figure from selling a property where you are and moving to a cheaper area, stay put! There's plenty of good riding easily accesssed from Birmingham, with some good spots practically on your doorstep like Cannock Chase and the Malvern Hills.
If you must move then in your line of work, somewehere around Pontefract and Castleford is where you'd want to be based so still a good drive from any good riding. Close to the M62, A1 and M1 you'd have plenty of options workwise within 30 mins drive of your home but 30 mins each way after doing a 15 hour shift soon takes it's toll! I'd imagine the hourly rates would be shock to the system too.
I'm Halifax born and bred, The town centres typically 'pound shops and pubs' as are most Northern towns these days but its nice enough once you get on the outskirts, great riding in any direction and good links to manchester/leeds. Yeah North Yorks is nicer but you need to be a gazzilionaire to buy decent property out that way.
As said everywhere has its good bits and bad bits 🙂
Huddersfield here, which I have to say has been great for me. North Yorkshire is as others say more desirable, but one advantage of being more centrally located is the easier access you get to a wider variety of areas - peaks/ north wales, lakes and dales are all within easy reach for me...
Guisborough is for middle class refugees from the rest of teesside that think Yarm and Ingleby Barwick are a bit too common and suburban (i.e. don’t have woodburners).
I grew up in G'bro, and my parents still live there. Never seen a woodburner. What they have is hiking and mtb'ing right from the front door, the services of a small town and within reach of a larger town. When I was 18 I couldn't wait to leave but now I'm a lot older I see the attraction.
(It's not in Yorkshire, btw 🙂 )
North Yorkshire! It has it all. And the A1 if good road links needed.
OP - if North Yorkshire, take a look at Reed Boardall just outside Boroughbridge for possible work.
