Im a HUGE fan of a chap called Jonathan Meades. One of my heroes.

He has a new programme on iPlayer - The Joy of Essex. It wont be up there long.

If you have any interest in architecture, social history, aesthetics, rarefied sarcasm etc etc, I highly recommend it.

It includes a fantastic celebration of Modernism as well as uncovering a county that Id never imagined I would spend any time thinking about.

He is a clever bastard.

Essex has some hidden gems, unfortunately I was pretty far from any in my time at Southend on Sea

He is a clever bastard.

So, I thought, was I.

But I have to watch his stuff twice and with google on speed-dial 🙂

Cheers Pook, added to list.

Yup, watched it last week and it's excellent (if occasionally esoteric) stuff as usual. Interesting section about the 19th century Salvation Army project at Hadleigh Farm, so there's a tenuous link to biking too.

He does the religious thing very well. Against dogma and irrationality, but all for celebration and morality. My kind of theism 🙂

He was pretty scathing of Booth and his scheme though eh?

Meades is great. I think he's written some novels also, has anybody read them?

yes, Ive got Filthy English and the one about a funeral parlour.

He does write like he presents though. Dark stuff too.

I prefer his TV essays.

There's a DVD box set that brings together some of his series, but not all.
Something to do with sound rights means you cant get a lot of his work on DVD. I bitched about it in here a while ago

At the risk of summoning the STW pitchfork squad, I'll say that I've managed to get everything he's done for the BBC via "informal" channels. Hunt around online.
