For cooking, I'm all for them. I still like butter on toast though.
For refining into a variety of fuels, lubricants and plastics, crude is probably better. But we should be moving away from that really.
I generally use cheap olive oil for cooking, extra virgin for dressing. Sesame oil for adding flavour. Sunflower oil if I don't want the flavour of olive oil.
Butter improves everything though.

Theres a really interesting Malcolm Gladwell article called the Basement Tapes about how, really, we like the idea of the 'Mediterranean Diet' more than the facts. So much so that when someone ran one of the most closely controlled and thorough trials into diet and health ..... he just hid the results rather than publish them because he liked the idea of the Mediterranean diet more.
The problem with the research that highlighted 'Mediterranean diet' is that the research focused on one locality in the med and compared it to the US diet - but not everyone in the Mediterranean eats the food from that locality . The researchers ignored the fact that there are parts of Italy where they typically cook with lard instead of olive oil, in the French Mediterranean the diet is heavy in dairy and yet health outcomes across the region are very similar. It's entirely flawed and outdated research. But it tastes nice so thats fine. The fact that it was debunked 40-odd years ago doesn't seem to bother anyone.

My health advice would be to avoid watching nonsense like this based on nothing more than opinion. That you actually watched 90 minutes of this should be a red flag
There's equally convincing evidence coming from people like Richard Wilkinson, Robert Putnam and Danny Dorling that health and longevity are closely linked to levels of in/equality and social capital and that their evidence cuts across diets and nations. However, that presents political issues so it's much easier to individualise the problem and either sell them something or blame the victim.

Pretty much everything is though - people with better education and higher incomes generally do better on any sort of measurable outcome. It doesn't mean that living on fried food and fizzy drinks isn't really bad for your health though.

Rates of Cancer, Hearth Disease and Altzhimers are symptoms of longer lives. Since the early 20th Century we've massively reduced ways of dying young in all sorts of ways. You can't look at one food ingredient and isolate it from everything else a solution is exposed to over time - Clean Air legislation, the invention of antibiotics, workplace safety and preventions of industrial illness and injury, reductions in smoking, the introduction of seat belts and airbags, improvements in housing or the reducing prevalence of conscription, national service, total war blitzkrieg. (we hope)

I'm sure we could plot a graph that shows rates of Alzheimer diagnosis (which is a disease thats only recorded in circumstances where people bother to diagnose it) against the cumulative weight of Natural History broadcast tapes in the BBC archive.
