With the popularity of both dogs and vans on here, I can't believe that someone doesn't have the perfect solution for securing their dog in the back of a van. VW T5 in this case, if it matters. He's normally on the back seat with a harness and secured via the seatbelt, but we're going on holiday and need all the seats for humans.

We have D-rings in the floor in the load space, so I though a shock-absorbing lead and carabiner attached to his harness might do the job.

A crate might be better? Could secure it in place with said D rings... Just a thought.
Fitted with appropriate bedding.
Could also be used at home for a little den /dog bed when not travelling.

VW Van? Just strap them to the Santa Cruz.

I'd go crate. I'm considering taking the top half of the bulkhead out and carpeting etc the back to put dogs in a crate in back. Safer all in all.

We used either a metal cage or a dog trailer attached to the D ring using a carabiner - VW T4

We’ve just taken our 2 dogs from Norfolk to North Wales in a crate secured in the back of my van. Its how the Police transport their dogs so must be ok.

We have our two spanners in crates, one on each side behind the back row of seats, they can get in/ out with ease via the sliding doors. Keeps them safe from any moving around in the back too.

I keep the dog in the front, that way the back stays hair-free for humans. Just don't let his paws press the pedals!

Webbing loop around a seat base. And a dog bed to soften the blow of being demoted to the floor.

(Dogs hate traveling in my van, I suspect the insecurity of not being encapsulated in a carpeted boot worries them as the bit between the seats is quite open.

My dog travels in a cage. Simple as that. Just get one and secure appropriately. Add vetbed.

In the past my dog travelled in a crate in the boot of the VW Eos with the central seat pad removed so he could still see us never phased him.

Have you got captains chairs or the bench up front? My dog normally lies or sits in the gap between the captains chairs. Back is completely empty (T6 Kombi)

Dog cage secured with four trailer straps in the back. Our pooch is pretty safe, in the event of an accident he should only hit the side of his cage, rather than anything solid, or even us.

25/30kg of dog suddenly being propelled at any speed isn't going to end well.

Our hound loves travelling in His van, leave the door open and he's inside.

I can’t believe that someone doesn’t have the perfect solution for securing their dog in the back of a van.

Do you even Google, bro?

There's loads of custom fit cages on the internet. Lots of companies make purpose built dog transit cages, made for agility and dog handlers.

Theyre the best, more secure option. But expensive. A good quality one will set you back £500-600.

You can get yourself a crate for about £60, and get some ratchet straps to strap it down. The other option is to drill it into the floor.

You CANNOT leave your dog in the back without being in a cage. If you have a crash they don't just go forward or back, they'll go side to side and up and down. Make sure they have a good fit cage to protect them from collisions if one did happen.
