So the Skipperlets now have an Xbox each thanks to Father Christmas and although we have been able to download all the games onto it by setting one as the home console and auto-signing in the second one we have noticed that none of the DLC, in for example, Forza is available without buying it again. Previously I bought the Ultimate bundle with all the Lego cars and they show as downloadable but it takes you to the store to purchase.

Is there a way round this or do we have to buy the expansion packs again?

I noticed exactly the same problem the other day (Lego DLC on Forza 4 on auto-login console) but didn’t investigate. Not sure if it’s a new issue or was already there. May have a look and report back. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

No 2 son says it’s been like that on the new Xbox since we downloaded it. New Xbox is the auto sign in one. Haven’t tried swapping them but the DLC is fully available when he logs in on the other one which is the original and set as Home console.

So I contacted Microsoft and they advised deleting the account from the Xbox and restarting then signing back in again. This does seem to have made the content downloadable again from the Store. Unfortunately I already bought it again so I can't tell what fixed it for sure. When I purchased the content again it was available straight away without downloading anything additionally. Now I have deleted my account and signed in again it is actually downloading the content which seems odd as it must already be installed. I hope it's just overwriting the relevant data rather than using up more storage as the 1TB is nearly full already and there are only half a dozen games on it!!! 😲

I have requested a refund from Microsoft though so I'll see if they give me one....

How can you be running out of space with 1tb? I have loads of games installed on the same size drive and have barely scratched it.

Depends on the games I guess, 'big' titles can easily be 100gb, plus expansion packs and DLC..

What console is it? Series X|S games are a lot bigger than Xbox One games.

Yes big games can be >60Gb with quite a few nearer 100Gb. Soon eats it up.. I’ve got 136 Gb free and 13 games installed.

which brings me to my next question…. What’s the best storage expansion option? 4tb Seagate USB 3 or will Western Digital do? Or do I have to use the Seagate 1Tb SSD at £190 if I don’t want to have to keep swapping games from the HDD to the internal SSD in order to play them…???

Exactly as you said. If you want to run Series games from it, the only option is the official one. A USB3 device will allow you to store games but you'd have to copy them to internal storage to run. You can, however, run Xbox One / 360 games directly from external storage.

You've seen the Game Pass thread, right?

Right, gonna need to throw another £200 at it then. Good job I got one at RRP rather than EBay prices…🙄

Yes, thanks. I’ve got a current one running on the original Xbox One that we got 3 Christmas’ ago that I upgraded for 3 years at a £1 a year but that runs out in April. Hopefully it’s still available then. Doesn’t look like you can upgrade early… or can you?

Ah, wasn't aware of that. Makes total sense, same game at bigger resolution obviously takes up massively more storage space 🤔

As an aside those Seagate drives are garbage, I had one that got RMA'd at just under a year old and by that point it seemed to be the norm. Got my money back and spent it on an SSD which on an XBone was a performance booster.

Its not so much the resolution you're viewing at, its the size of all the graphics files the game need stored on the disk...If you download the HD texture pack for farcry 6, for example, the game will need an *additional* 37gb drive space. All or most of the art assests are more detailed and therefore have bigger file sizes.

A 1mb model of a shrub might now be 6mb* as it contains more detailed texture files.

*made up numbers but should illustrate the point.

Hmm I suppose. In that case it seems a bit off making external drives a walled garden if storage is such an issue

It's a con, plain and simple.
