We've had a 300D since new, it's still a great camera even if it is a dinasour by today's standards. It takes great photos, with lots of control and I have a couple of different lenses which obviously make a big difference. My daughter recently bought a new Nikon and to be honest as a occasional photograpgher I dont think its the the photos are so much better, yes for sure the new camera has a much better screen, features, video and image resolution but IMO my extra lenses beat the newer camera for normal photos.. So a lot depends what you are looking to use it for.

Yep, Nikon D50 here - 7 years old but still takes a great photo..
I'll probably replace before our next holiday, just to get something a bit lighter, and to keep the reliability up.

If you are looking for a second hand Nikon DSLR camera have a look here

Grays of Westminster only deal in Nikon camera gear and there staff are very knowledgeable plus their shop is like a Savile Row tailors, plush carpets and expensive looking display cabinets. Used them before and they have been great.

Greys are good, MPB Photographic are as well. I've had a Nikon D80 for agrees and it's excellent, by the way. Probably a better bet than the 70s.

mpbphotographic.co.uk are worth checking out too - I got the D7000 from them plus pretty much all my lenses. The D800E was the only new purchase!

D80 is a great camera, as is D90 or D7000.

Bought my wife a MINT Olympus E-420 for £120 off eBay. She loves it, bought a small camera bag to use as a handbag so she can take it everwhere 🙂

Astonishingly good value. I think a lot of people buy SLRs because they think they want to take better photos, then realise they are a faff, never use them, so then sell them on almost unused. Should be some bargains around.

People also upgrade a lot as state of the art one year soon becomes quite old hat, however the kit is still great and a decent SLR has years of life in it.

450d from Harrison cameras here. The Canon that switched to SD card, so mad sense to go on one model from the 400.

Currently using a 2nd hand Canon 30d myself, and also own a 350d which I've had since new.

I must have reeled off 100k shots and both of them have been excellent (aside from some niggles with the inbuilt flash - on both of them).

Personally I much prefer the layout of controls on the 30d and it becomes much quicker to use once you know your way around it well. But it depends what you want, it is also a lot bigger and heavier than the 350d.

Image quality will be virtually the same as newer models. What you will get from new cameras is the technology. Live view. Video. Pop out LCD. Etc. Mostly just nice gizmos. Again, depends what you find important. One of the biggies perhaps, is higher ISO capabilities, which allows you to shoot in lower light conditions.

The Canon 40d has a massive fan base it seems. After that one, very much like with bikes when the recession hit, specs went down in newer models, so the 40d still has a good following, and can be picked up for a good price now.

I'd look at end of line cameras rather than used first. They're often cheaper.

Grays of Westminster...Used them before and they have been great.

I used to use them a lot. But after traveling some considerable distance to pick up a lens I'd inquired about, then finding out the lady I spoke to had misidentified the lens, and receiving no satisfactory apology, I ceased giving them business. I notice they now quote Ken Rockwell in places, and if that doesn't doesn't tell you everything you need to know... 😯

This. As technology moves forward with such pace, and as DSLRs have a limited shutter life (and repair isn't costs effective), it makes the most sense.
