Apparently the Flexi pipe is worn and blowing.
Apparently £750 for total new exhaust.
Tell me it's not true.

(2012 Ibiza estate 1.4 16v, NOT TSI)

I've already found front bit with catalytic for £198 instead of £500 garage quoted.

After market stainless steel. Find an independent ( not powerflow etc) and ask for the quiet version. It will be a bit louder than OEM. Had it done on our Yaris when Toyota wanted silly money, saved about £400 for cat back.

Also can you not just replace the flexi bit?

Take it the op's quote is from a main dealer, an exhaust specialist should be able to do it much cheaper.

That's my hope. £30+labour it seems.

It's from a (trusted) tyres and exhaust place. That said, it's mrs_oab who took the car in...

Exhausts are usually quite modular, you can replace cat, flexi, back box, mid box if there is one and sections of pipe independently normally.

Get a quote from a local place. They should be able to source the failing part individually. For a fraction of that quote.

It depends on the car, a lot are one piece (not like racing ones, just lots of bits welded together rather than bolted) so replacing an individual part can be difficult as you would have to cut up the original one to remove the bad bits.

In better news, I replaced the OH's Fiesta exhaust with the cheapest one on ebay, think it came from germany.

It was so bad* that kwickfit who originally failed the old one at the MOT thought we had been conned and been sold a scrap one sprayed with silver paint which flaked off as soon as it got hot!

Still there 4 years later. Sounds like a baffle has gone when it starts up but no holes yet.

Cost £82 for the entire exhaust and £20 for a garage to fit it after I lost the will to live trying to undo the bolts to the catalyst.

A stainless exhaust is a waste of money unless you really will be keeping the car for another 8 years.

*not actually that bad, but it is 3 pieces held together with clamps and flanges rather than the OEM one piece.

Yep I think that is about right for genuine replacement parts as it is quite a large section that includes then at and connector to the manifolds.

I think they later replaced it with a modular part so you can just replace the flexi pipe.

Try exhaust specialist and see if they can cut it out and weld in a new piece rather than replace the whole lot.

I was able to bodge mine with using a clamp on exhaust sleeve thing. That managed to block the hole enough to pass the MOT and was good enough for the dealer when I part exchanged the car for something shinier

The issue might be where the corrosion is on the sections. if it is near the joins they may not be able to just replace 1-2 sections. We had this issue with the Yaris, the back box rotted at the centre section join which also suffered corrosion.Too much to cut out and patch.

Also there was a cat in the centre section which put the price up massively - don't know if this is the case with the Ibiza.

edit : genuine exhausts are made from thicker gauge steel so are more costly but will most likely last another 6 years not 18 months like an after market mild steel exhaust.
Stainless steel isn't a waste of money, it will cost more than an after market but will last a long time and at a car of 6 yrs a potential buyer will see less maintenance costs. Get a quiet system and it will not detract from the car in other ways.

Some clarification after I've been back and to another place this morning.

It is only the Flexi section that has gone, rest is fine.

This model is *only* available as a one piece front section, including catalytic.

Even then, the prices are between £500 and £575 for the part.

Or the car service place called supplier and had a good ask - the Flexi pipe for later morel fits, just needs cutting out and welding back in. Cost £200.

Clamp on flex joints are available in a wide range of diameters and lengths on eBay for less than £20. Quite a common repair on exhausts, cut the old one out, stick some exhaust paste on and clamp the new one in place. I've bought cars with repairs like this and they've lasted more than 4 years; usually the flex goes again and the rest of the original exhaust is fine.

I don't disagree that the OEM and stainless options will last longer, but I bought the cheapest and shittiest one i could find as the car was 11 years old, a stainless one would have been more than the car was worth. An OEM spec one was more than it was worth. Whatever kwickfit offered was more than the car was worth.

I had a good poke around before it's last mot and apart from being rusty it's still fine 4 years on. If it failed tomorrow I could replace it every 4 years until the car is 25 years old and still be in profit vs the next cheapest kwickfit option. The odds of the rest of the car not being reincarnated as a tin can by then are astronomically small!
