A while ago we stupidly replaced our wooden window frames with uPVC and they now whistle when the wind blows. The seal between the window edge and the sandstone wall keeps failing. It was last “fixed” by a so called expert using a silicon sealant but this has come away from the stone and needs replacing, but with what? Anyone have any ideas what can be used to successfully seal the 1-2mm gap between the window surround and the sandstone wall?
Dog**** sticks to anything.
I would try CT1. Seems to be the best sealant out there for me. .
Try Compriband tape. You'll need to strip out all the existing silicon though.
Linseed oil mastic aka trowel mastic, Screwfix/Toolstation should keep it, a 10mm square tuck pointing trowel to apply . Look on you tube to see how to use a hawk and trowel and enjoy the nice smell of the oil
CT1 looks a good option. The trowel mastic isn’t meant to be suitable for plastics
The blushin' bride, she looks divine
The bridegroom he is doin' fine
I'd rather have his job than mine
When I'm sealin' windows.
Interested in this as our extension 3.5 years ago has nice wooden windows. The silicon sealant the builder used is failing between frame and brick and I’m concerned about water getting behind the front face of the expensive frames.
I used sadolin superdec white stain on them as find it lasts far better than traditional paint but wondered if that reacts badly with
Sealant.
Maybe the linseed version would be better?
How big a gap are we talking here?
I think mine needs to be filling with mirtar to fill then sealed.
What about some kind of compressible cord or bead pressed in to it ?
You can get O-ring cord in differing sections, 1mm, 1.6mn,2.1mm etc, could that be pressed in ?
Failing that, I’m guessing it’s the loose/dusty nature of the sandstone that keeps causing the sealant to lose its grip, what about sealing the stone with a PVA type sealant before applying...
I would go for a silicone seal using Arbo XL 1099 and relevant primer. Be careful with the primer as it can stain the stone.

I would avoid Compriband tape unless the structure around the window and window profile is flat and parallel. Compriband works by compression and it doesn't fill gaps in the same way silicone does.
Builder mate seals around window/door frames with squirty foam. Seems to do the job.
Looks like I will need to seal the stone in some way first as that seems to be how the sealant is failing.
Having reread the OP Compriband won't really work with a 1-2mm gap.
Can you try some kind of compressible rod or inert woven product pushed into the gap then silicon up against it?
OP - If you use silicone (recommended) then make sure the bead is at least 6mm thick. This will prevent the silicone from cracking with changes in temperature and gives enough product to allow flexibility.
