There in an old chimney in my lad's room and it is sucking heat out of the house. The roof was replaced a few years back and the chimney was part demolished, so it is basically a tube going up into the loft. Can't access it from the top as it stops a couple of inches of the roof.
Anyone used on of these?
Does it work?
Does it last?
My mum and dad have one. Been in use for a few years but they put it just above the fire and take it in and out as necessary. If you are going to put it at the top of the remaining stack you'd want it to stay well inflated I suppose. I'll ask them if it goes flat over time.
I put one in our spare bedroom . We still have the chimney intact. Our house is late victorian
the fire place has been opened up and a cast iron fireplace put in.
the draughts where awful in winter.
We recently re decorated the room thought we would give it a try the wife had been told about them by someone
it seems to work ok certainly stops the draughts .
my only problem is if it rains really hard drops come down chimney and hit the sock.
sounds like a bloody machine gun !
Have had a terracotta cap on chimney pot as we had a problem with pigeons trying to nest at one stage !
But still lets rain drops in onlyl if its absolutely pelting down though
the room isnt occupied now as daughter moved out etc
but yeah its worth a try for the money.
Yeah forgot to mention ours is in place just above fire also.
If the chimney just goes into an uninsulated loft then your cheapest option is just to jam a heap of rockwool insulation in the bottom.
It is not going to get wet unless your roof leaks unlike a chimney where water can come down it. Then you have no worries about it deflating and falling out.
i like these

Slow Internet double post.
We've got one of those balloons. Works really well.
We took it out a few weeks ago to give the fire it's winter try-out.
Quite surprised by the amount of wind shooting down the chimney once we removed it!
The living room heats up much quicker with in in place.
we used to get traffic noise down the chimney!
old cushion in garden rubbish bag and stuff up chimney bish bosh job done
We had a number of areas of damp sorted when we moved into our flat, some caused by old chimneys being blocked without vents at the bottom, though the vents give draughts! I thought about balloons, but surely I just run into the same issues with lack of airflow causing damp as we had before?
We have a ballon in an unused chimney, they have a little gap in one side, so there is some air flow to prevent damp build up.
I'd try the rock wool idea first as well.
At our last place there was just a piece of foam board ,cut to fit the fire place.
Was fine.no damp,but there was a little airflow .
I cleaned it out once, a dead pigeon landed on me bonce!
Stuffed a bin bag full of bubble wrap and jammed it up there. There is a little air flow and it seems to work.
For free.
Bonus.
Chimney pepperpots are the best semi permanent solution for chimneys that still extend through the roof & have existing chimney pots, rockwool plug or other such stuffing in a bin liner would probably be best for OP
House I rented the bedroom fireplace had just been filled with expanding foam. But there was a stove in the living room so the heat from that must have kept it dry.
