Does anybody know of any specialist companies that deal with scrapping of dangerous machinery? We have some old pieces of equipment with quite large compressed springs inside (springs are around 1.8m long and 0.5m dia uncompressed).
We do not have the facilities to safely dismantle and scrap the pieces of kit.
Any suggestions?
Assuming we ain't talking room sized bits of kit
The crusher won't bat an eyelid.....
The real concern is if you don't get proof of destruction and they make their way out into the market as vintage machinery -not sure what it is you have but the above does happen.
We send a representative to the site to watch any equipment that hasn't been gasaxed into non salvageable parts be destroyed for audit purposes.
That is interesting - thanks. No, not massive. It is a cast cylinder around 2.5m long and around 0.8m dia.
Tbh that's similar to the sort of things we would be getting rid of.....
Speak with local scrap merchants they will tell you what is and isn't possible.
Just be clear it's got potential energy stored within so they don't try and dismantle to seperate rather than just crush it , make sure it's clearly labeled. Those messages don't always get to the coal face.
The bigger issue comes when it's got hazardous fluids(any chemical or oil) in those have to be drained disposed + cleaned first cost is incredible.
Just leave it outside over the weekend and let the low lifes take it?
Rig it up to a bait bike as the a trigger and film it for YouTube? Spring the bike thief to the moon! BOING!!!!!!
(for avoidence of any doubt, this is not a serious suggestion)
Repurpose as a giant squirrel trap. Better still, a bear trap. I hear there may be a market for them in Scotland

The mother of all air rifles?
Just stand behind a big bit of steel and cut it up with a really long gas axe...
The mother of all air rifles?
Sounds like a worldclass squirrel killer
If its cast, and not under any sort of pressure the scrappy will just break it up with hammers and chuck it in their skip.
We had a gigantic belt sander, was about 9' long and 6' high 4' deep mostly cast iron. ended up taking up so much space and was never use it was finally decided to be rid of and no care about making money off it. Called a scrap merchants and described it, asked if he had a forklift as it weighed about 2 tons, but he turned up with a van and three guys with hammers and smashed it all to bits.
Problem solved.
Anyone who smashes one of these to bits will almost definitely end up dead (and maybe a couple of others in the close vicinity). We have an ethical obligation to ensure they are scrapped safely!
I think you should give it to that kid on the What's Inside YouTube channel 🙂
They can blow it up with a nice super slow mo camera 🙂
Haha!! One of the serious suggestions was to approach the army and ask if they could use them for tank target practice!
Ooh yeah, sent it to Colin Furze and Slomo Guys
BTW, what was the original use of all that potential energy stored in the big springy things?

To operate what????? need more details!!!!
Beck and Pollitzer would be able deal with it. Have used them a few times at work for big machine moves/oddball engineering stuff.
I can’t believe that WCA passed up the chance to release those springs using an angle grinder.
There must be some squirrels left that he could target. 🙂 🙂

I'm guessing hydraulic accumulator?
Explains why you can't just dismantle it, you'd need a lot of preload on the spring to keep the pressure consistent across its range.

We had a similar issue at my work, three massive nested springs under compression in a big metal can, the kit had malfunctioned and needed to be safely removed.
The kicker was, it was a couple of hundred metres subsea at the time.
So, based on my experience, I'd say you need to use a remotely operated water cutter to cut it into lots of teeny tiny bits.
Leave at the end of your drive… someone will “dispose” of it 😳
So the answer seems to be dump it at sea and let kenneth sort it out!
let kenneth sort it out!
Now now just to be clear Kenneth doesn't do any of the sorting.
He sits at his desk, drinks coffee and issues sarcastic commands to his proles while handing out pretty coloured in work instructions*
* He knows this is an accurate description 🙂
Colin Furze ?

^^ I think that would do it 🙂
Build-->>The Ultimate Home Defence System* and send intruders to the next county.
*Tripwires not included

I strongly object to this factually-incorrect description of my role.
I STAND at my desk, dammit!
