If Scots live in Scotland, why aren't people who live in England called Engs?
Because we have a much better name for them.
…Germs live in Germany?
Because we are a diverse mixture of all
Kinds of people from many different places. Most of us don't have a narrow nationalistic view.
Because we have a much better name for them.
👏👏
Canadians live in Canadia.
We were Angles, hence Angle-land. I suppose with the mixing in of the Saxons and whoever else chose to invade us over the centuries we're no longer true Angles, merely Angle-ish.
What would you suggest we call people from ****stan?
Just don’t ask Scotroutes the Nigeria question..
I used to work in a place in Newcastle, which had a high proportion of Scottish people working there. The locals called us jockroaches!
I thought that was pretty funny! 🤣🤣
Because we have a much better name for them.
Such as?
Sassenach, I assume. Can’t think of anything else he could be meaning . . .
Canadians live in Canadia.
Darf ich eine Witze.....
Warum heisst Kanada Kanada?
What about those Wa's from Wales?
I'm ashamed to say I don't get it?
Could you explain for me please? And others who may be hard of thinking like me?
Sassenach, I assume. Can’t think of anything else he could be meaning . . .
Southron perhaps ...
What about those Wa’s from Wales?
The ones famous for inventing the famous guitar effect in the 70s.
Could you explain for me please? And others who may be hard of thinking like me?
I assumed "Those English Bastards" or a variation thereof.
Such as?
English. Surely it's not that hard?
Wasn't it Kennedy that claimed to be a Berliner (a type of doughnut)?
@cougs
Google translate gives:
May I joke...
Why is Canada called Canada
I can't help but feel I'm being a bit mince here!
i don't think the punchline has been put forth yet, i think i know what it is and if i don't then i have a joke that has an aditional punchline
we’re no longer true Angles, merely Angle-ish.
Deserved more credit.
The simple answer is language isn't fixed so shorter form demonyms like "Scot" or "Pole" are probably only adopted if they work to the speakers ears. Engs and Ires don't really work as words so the longer form alternative English and Irish is used instead.
Were people form Swaziland called Swazis?
What would you suggest we call people from ****stan?
A mate had to have that awkward conversation with a ****stani lad he was working with at sea, basically along the lines of "You're a Scot so I'm a...". Logically it makes perfect sense, it just happens to have been hijacked as a pejorative/ignorant catch-all.

I believe Renton described the shortcomings of both nations rather well.
Warum heisst Kanada Kanada?
Weiss nicht, warum heisst Kanada Kanada? Bitte...
Darf ich eine Witze…..
Warum heisst Kanada Kanada?
Es gibt keine da!
< Edit, too slow>
Thanks sboardman
But Scotland is Alba in gaelic, so surely the people who live there are Albanians?
Great Britain is also known as Albion, so are all British people Albanians too, not just those from Scotland?
We were Angles
Understandable. Some here are quite obtuse.
I always thought you were Scotch from Scotland. Like the eggs.
But Scotland is Alba in gaelic, so surely the people who live there are Albanians?
Albannachs innit
Albannachs innit
Nope- Albannaich
I always thought you were Scotch from Scotland. Like the eggs
Nope, I find being called Scotch quite offensive
I believe Renton described the shortcomings of both nations rather well.
Between sorting out bikes? Impressive.
Great Britain is also known as Albion, so are all British people Albanians too
Albonians, obviously.
I think that Scottish people should henceforth be called Scotlish, for consistency.
So Albannaich for Scots, Albionnaich for Brits?
Nope- Albannaich
Only for the ladies here
@swavis, No offence intended, just an idle quip. I made a few friends when I lived in Sutherland so I know it grates.
Sorry DP
I don't know about the rest of you but this is making me really want a whisky right now.
Are some people are taking everyday's a school day a bit too literally?
gordimhor
Full Member@mashr Would that not be Boireannaich Albannach?
Not as far as I’m aware. If this is wrong feel free to update it:

@JefWachowchow no offense taken 😎
And anyone wanting a whisky should be here now (Aberlour), Spirit of Speyside Whisky festival is back on, it's great seeing/hearing all the tourists again, just been chatting to a couple of Americans that are absolutely buzzing about being back.
